Directions to court house in Jacksboro and Historical Center in LaFollette.
You will find as much research material at the Historical Center, and
quicker, than you will at the court house.
Take I-75 north from Knoxville to exit 134 (that is the US Hwy 25 exit at
Caryville), follow US 25 for about one to two miles and you will see a sign
for Jacksboro on your right. Turn right and this will be Main St in
Jacksboro. Follow that street for about another mile and you will be in the
middle of Jacksboro and the court house is on the left with a parking log on
the left side of the court house. This will be Kentucky St. The County
Clerk's office is in the rear of the building near the Sheriff's Dept. The
hours are 8am to 5pm Mon-Fri except holidays. There is a small library
across the street from the court house but it is not worth wasting your
limited time.

The Historical Center is downtown LaFollette about 10 miles farther on US
25. Hours are from 9am to 2pm, Mon-Sat, and sometimes the volunteer worker
on duty will stay a little longer if they know you are from out of town and
on limited time. They are all very helpful. If I were you, I would try to
squeeze in another day at least. There is a lot of material there.
Follow US 25 into the middle of LaFollette. The area between Jacksboro and
LaFollette is a congested area and you may not know when you leave one town
and enter the other. But you will recognize the downtown LaFollette area
when you get to the center of town. The Historical Center is on the left
side of Central Ave. which is also US25, between Tennessee Ave. and Indiana
Ave. It is located between a flower shop and a camper top business. There
is a sign in front of the building. I don't know the exact address. I
recommend that you get there when they first open and I guarantee you will
not be able to see ever thing you want to see before closing time. They
have a lot of genealogy books (some are for sale), a file cabinet with
individual family researcher's files, a copy machine (10 cents per copy),
two microfilm machines, and very helpful volunteers. They do not have a
microfilm machine that will print copies so, if you find something on
microfilm, you will have to hand copy it. Have a nice trip.
