RAY DONALD DAVENPORT, 66, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002,
at his home.
Born April 5, 1936, in Woodbury, he had lived in this area for 14 years. He
was a retired telephone engineer and had worked for South Central Bell.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Butler Davenport; his daughter, Terri
Hill and her husband, Jeffrey; his son, David Davenport and his wife, Nancy,
all of Oliver Springs; and his grandchildren, Christopher Hill, Tiffany
Davenport, Sarah Davenport and Sydney Davenport.
Mr. Davenport is also survived by is mother, Ruby Cooper Davenport of
Spartanburg, S.C.; and his sister, Judith Ann Rogers, also of Spartanburg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marlin Davenport.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at
Kingston Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 12, at Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

CHARLES MAXWELL "Hap" WEST, 82, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002,
at NHC HealthCare Center in Knoxville.
Mr. West was a retired certified health physicist and had worked many years
at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant and Oak Ridge Associated Universities. He was the
author or co-author of 23 papers on health physics, industrial hygiene and
epidemiology.
He was designated a Fellow in the National Health Physics Society in 1985 in
recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession of health physics.
Mr. West served as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency and
as a representative of the United States government to finalize an IAEA
publication on safe handling of radionuclides.
He was a member of the Health Physics Society Standards Committee/American
National Standard Institute.
Mr. West was a charter member of the '43 Club, a group recognized for
original efforts related to the Manhattan Project. He was also active in
Toastmasters International and held various offices in his local chapter.
He was also a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Clinton.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Evelyn Wear West; his children,
Angleque Bryson and her husband, Roy, of Aiken, S.C., and Brian West and his
wife, Tamela, of Katy, Texas; his sisters, Rachel Shelton of Knoxville, Mary
Irvin and Francis Reaves and her husband, Charlie, all of Hueytown, Ala., and
Doris McKay of Guinn, Ala.; and his brother, the Rev. Pete West and his wife,
Betty, of Chillersburg, Ala.
Mr. West is also survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Talley of Townsend,
Shirley White and her husband, Troy, of Maryville; his brother-in-law, Bill
Wear and his wife, Jackie, of Alcoa; his grandchildren, Kimberly Langston,
Emily Bryson and Michelle Mirelas; and his great-granddaughter, Allison
Mirelas.
A memorial service celebrating Mr. West's life will be held at 8 p.m.
Saturday, July 13, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton
with the Rev. John Clark and the Rev. Glenn Patterson officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 14, at Sherwood
Memorial Gardens in Alcoa.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American
Heart Association, 4708 Papermill Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

BARBARA DUNCAN, 45, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born May 19, 1957, in Oliver Springs, she was the daughter of Thelma Silvey
of Oliver Springs and Meredith Silvey, who is deceased.
Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker and had been a lifelong resident of the Oliver
Springs area. She was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Louis M. Duncan.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughter, Susie Duncan of
Oliver Springs; her son, Brandon Braden of Oliver Springs; and her
grandchildren, Haylee Katherine Moore and Dallas McKinley Moore, both of
Oliver Springs.
Mrs. Duncan is also survived by five brothers, Jimmie Silvey, Cecil Silvey,
James Silvey and his wife, Peggy, Jesse Silvey and his wife, Brenda, and
Vincent Silvey, all of Oliver Springs; and two sisters, Helen McKay and her
husband, Burke, and Pam Hunter and her husband, Jerry, all of Oliver Springs.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Indian Creek Baptist
Church with the Rev. Don Daugherty and the Rev. Terry Braden officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

LESTER 'Les' JAMES KING, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
He was born Oct. 31, 1927, in West Warwick, R.I., the son of Edward Jones
King and Audrey Viola Bates King.
Mr. King was manager of the Transuranium Processing Plant (TRU) for the
Chemical Technology Division.
He received bachelor's and master's degrees of science in chemical
engineering from the University of Rhode Island. He served two years in the
United States Air Force before joining the Chemical Technology Division in
1954.
Mr. King worked on the OREX and THOREX process pilot plant projects and
attended the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology in 1956-1957. Following
ORSORT, he was group leader for a cooperative Oak Ridge National
Laboratory/Westinghouse project to operate in-pile test loops in the Oak
Ridge Research Reactor to study the use of thoria slurries for the
Pennsylvania Advanced Reactor. This was followed by a variety of assignments
in high-level and low-level liquid radiological waste process development,
reactor fuel cycle studies and other facets of radiochemical reprocessing.
Mr. King became TRU Technical Group leader in 1965 and manager of TRU in
1972. In 1979, he was a member of the ORNL group that provided assistance
following the Three Mile Island reactor accident and helped develop the
chemical process that was used to decontaminate the water released by the
accident and the reactor coolant.
He had been a member of the Director's Radioactive Operations Committee since
1978. Mr. King served as assistant section head, Isotope Technology Section,
Chemical Technology Division from 1991 until his retirement in 1993.
He was a registered professional engineer and a member of St. Stephen's
Episcopal Church.
Mr. King is survived by his wife, Marie "Terri" King; his sons, Greg King of
Houston, Texas, Bob King and his wife, Debbie, of Oak Ridge, and Steve King
and his wife, Lori, of Knoxville; his daughter, Judy King and her husband,
Garry, of Gatlinburg; his grandsons, Matthew King, Michael King and Jason
Mick; his granddaughter, Cheryl Mick; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by his brothers,
Edward King and Russell King.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Claire Keene officiating.
A private graveside service will be held Sunday, July 14, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
Lester J. King Memorial Endowment Fund, payable to the University of Rhode
Island Foundation, 95 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.
