BAXTER, JEAN ROSA LEE KING - age 77 of Oak Ridge, died Sunday July 7, 2002 at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born on July 3, 1925, in
Berea, Ky., and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Baxter, a
retired FED EX pilot; parents, Maude Adkins King and Frank W. King of
Rockholds, Ky.; daughter, Carla Jean Jones; sisters, Alma King Rains and
Elsie King Eldred; brother, Clyde F. King; brothers in law; several beloved
nieces and nephews; and Carl Jones, the father of her five children. She is
survived by three daughters, Celia "Candy" Thacker, Sheron "Sheri" Jones and
Tara Muraco; and one son, Larry King Jones, all of Oak Ridge; grandsons, Chad
Bushby (wife, Amy), Knoxville, Nicholas Suttles and Chase May of Oak Ridge,
Colt Messer and Marc Messer of Sandy Hook, Ky. and Michael Muraco of Rocklin,
Calif.; three sisters, Osa King Brown, Sada King Siler (husband, Earl) and
Ruby King Jones; and one brother, John "Jack" King (wife, Ruth) all of Ky.
She leaves many beloved family members and dear friends. Special thanks to
dear sister, Ruby; sister in law, Lorraine Jones and special friends, Rhonda
Long, Ruth Sax, for their care and devotion. Jean came to the Lord when she
was fifteen years of age and is a member of Central Baptist Church of Oak
Ridge. She was very patriotic and loved working with veteran organizations.
She achieved the highest office of the National AMVETS Auxiliary, National
President, and held the distinct honor of being the first woman from
Tennessee to hold this office. She was a member of the East Tennessee
Historical Society and First Families of Tennessee, descending directly from
Major William King and John Sharp, Sr. She was a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star, Oak Ridge #390, Oak Ridge Ladies of the Elks of Lodge #1684 and
the Boat Club, Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2514, and
Women of the Moose #1062. She retired in 1989 from the Engineering Department
at Martin Marietta Energy Corporation. Funeral service Tuesday 8 p.m. in the
chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Gray officiating.
Interment will be Wednesday 11 a.m. in Williamsburg, Ky. The family will
receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Martin Oak Ridge
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
CASTELLAW, FRANK - of Ftn. City, passed away July 6, 2002 at his home. Member
of First Baptist Church of Ftn. City and Inskip Lions Club. Retired teacher
from Anderson County. Preceded in death by son, Kevin Castellaw and daughter,
Lounell Castellaw; sister, Polly Jordan. Survivors: wife, Betty Thompson,
Castellaw; son and daughter in law, Chris and Cheryl Castellaw;
grandchildren, Heather, Kristi, David and Deanna; mother, Reba Castellaw;
brothers, Gerald and Harold Castellaw and a special friend, Howard Nelson.
Family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst Cemetery 4 p.m. Tuesday for a
graveside service, Rev. Gary Shaffer and Ronald Brewer officiating. In lieu
of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ftn. City.
Family will receive friends at the Cemetery. Mynatt's in charge of
arrangements.
COBLE, JOHN WILLIAM - age 86, of 218 Hilldale Lane, LaFollette, passed away
Monday, July 8, 2002, at the St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. He
was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Coble
enjoyed carving and wood working, gardening, and was an avid Churchgoer. He
was a World War II Veteran. He loved his family very much. He was preceded in
death by parents, Walter Guy and Carmen Grimes Coble, and two brothers. Mr.
Coble is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn S. Coble of LaFollette; son
and daughter-in-law, Gary Sr. and Anne Coble of Corryton, Tenn.;
granddaughters and husbands, Jennifer and Steven McQuilkin of Lenoir City,
Tenn., Emily and Stephen Hayes of Casa Grande, Ariz., Cynthia and Jeff
Loveday; grandson, Morgan Coble, all of Corryton, Tenn.; three
great-grandchildren, Natalie, Suzanne and Lauren McQuilkin, and several
nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral
services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints with President Russell Figueira, Elder Bruce Williams and Elder Gene
Muggridge officiating. Full military honors will be held by the Campbell
County Honor Guard. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memorial Cemetery
in Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to a charity
of your choice. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, before services at the church. Martin Wilson Funeral Home, of
LaFollette, is in charge of the arrangements.
HULING, DOROTHY LORAINE - age 83, of Oak Ridge died Monday, July 8, 2002, at
her home. Member of Calvary Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband,
James Rudolph Huling, 7-16-1968, and son-in-law, Jack H. Hall. Survived by
sons, Howard R. Huling and wife, Elaine M. of Oak Ridge and Roy L. Huling and
wife Barbara J. of Kingston; daughter, Vivian L. Hall of Nashville, and
brothers, Donald McGill and Charles McGill. Special friend, Betty Hubbard of
Oak Ridge; 19 grandchildren; 27 great -grandchildren, and two great-great
grandchildren. Funeral services are Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at 8:00 p.m. at
Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Steve McDonald and Rev. Howard R. Huling
officiating. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at
Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist
Church, 163 N. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The family will receive
friends on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church. Weatherford Mortuary,
Oak Ridge, in charge of the arrangements.
MELZONI, REV. PETE, SR. - age 82 of Clinton, passed away Sunday July 7, 2002
at his residence. He was a member of Moran Baptist Church. He had pastored
several churches during his ministry including Jones Creek Church in Verda,
Kentucky, Poplar Creek Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of South
Lebanon, Ohio. He was a United States Marine veteran who served during World
War II and was a recipient of the Naval Cross. He had worked as a coal miner
in High Splint, Kentucky. Preceded in death by wife, Elizabeth "Betty"
Melzoni; daughter, Jacqulyn Melzoni; son, John Melzoni; parents, John &
Martha Cadwick Melzoni; great grandson, Mitch Maples; son in law, David
Hatton; sisters, Louella Smith, Paralee Jackson, Mildred Melzoni & Ethel
Kerkndall; brothers Eugene Burress, Lawrence Melzoni & Rev. Tommy Melzoni,
Sr. He was born March 12, 1920 in Ages, Kentucky. Survivors: son, Pete
Melzoni, II & wife, Sandra of Wabash, Ind.; daughters, Phyllis Maples &
husband, Merle of Wabash, Ind., Brenda Hatton of Clinton; 16 grandchildren;
22 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Iverson & husband, Ira of Pompano Beach,
Fla.; brother, Rev. Bill Melzoni & wife, Rachel of Harlan, Ky.; sisters in
law, Oza Melzoni of Pennington Gap, Va., Tressie Melzoni of Dayton, Ohio;
several nieces, nephews and extended family. The family will receive friends
6-8 p.m. Wednesday July 10, 2002 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton
with funeral service following the visitation at 8 p.m. in the chapel with
Rev. Kenneth Seeber, Rev. Bill Dawson and Rev. Kenny Sharp officiating.
Interment will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Anderson Memorial Gardens with
grandsons serving as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Melzoni
Foundation, Clear Creek Baptist Seminary, Pineville, Ky. Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all arrangements.
SEXTON, REV. IRA DEAN - age 80, of Sunbright, Tenn., departed this life on
Sunday, July 7, 2002. He was born August 20, 1921, in the Macedonia Community
on Emory River in Morgan County. He was an active member of Pilot Mountain
Missionary Baptist Church, and an ordained Missionary Baptist Minister for 54
years. He pastored many churches throughout Morgan and Roane Counties and
Northside Baptist and Sardis Baptist in Hammond, Indiana, as well as Meadow
Grove Baptist in Pine Knot, Kentucky, for 17 years. He also held many
revivals throughout East Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana, and was a 55 year
member of Emerald Lodge #377 of Wartburg. Ira was preceded in death by his
parents, Joe Freeman Sexton and Sally Griffith Sexton; brothers, Leamon,
Kermit, and Kelly Sexton and sisters, Della Phillips and Zina Newport. He is
survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Elizabeth Landrum Sexton; one
son, Joe Alvin Sexton and wife, Novena of Sunbright; three daughters, Mae
Agle Garrett and husband, David of Crossville, Wilda Jean Parks and husband,
J. R. of Wartburg, Jewell Ann Kesterson and husband, Joe of Crossville; one
brother, Gordon Sexton of Harriman; two sisters, Joyce Mitchell of Jamestown
and Geneva Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; thirteen (13) grandchildren and eighteen
(18) great- grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. The
family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 9, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30
p.m., followed by a Masonic Service at Schubert Funeral Home Chapel,
Wartburg. The body will lie- in-state at Pilot Mountain Missionary Baptist
Church from 12 Noon until 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, followed by funeral
service with Rev. Johnny Gray, Rev. Charles Webb, grandson, Rev. Roland
Kesterson, and Rev. Landis Sexton officiating. Interment will follow in the
Lane Cemetery. Schubert Funeral Home, of Wartburg, is in charge of
arrangements.
