ROY LEE "Sam" SAMPSEL Jr., 57, of Coalfield, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at
Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
Born July 6, 1944, in Coalfield, he was the son of Eva Dean Adcock Sampsel
and Roy Lee Sampsel Sr. His mother lives in Coalfield and his father is
deceased.
Mr. Sampsel had retired in 1992 as a contractor.
He was a very active member of Cumberland Baptist Church in Knoxville but he
was also very active in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Coalfield. In
addition to his mother, Mr. Sampsel is survived by his sons, George Evan
Sampsel and his wife, Carla, of Knoxville, and Joel Lee Sampsel and his wife,
Scarlett, of Wartburg; his grandchildren, Evan, Skylar and Zack; and his
brothers, Rodney Lynn Sampsel and his wife, Diane, of Texas, and Richard
Sampsel and his wife, Dottie, of Knoxville. Joyce Petrowski of Powell was
considered a special friend.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 6, at Pleasant Grove Baptist
Church in Coalfield with the Rev. Mack Smith and the Rev. Hershel Chevallier
officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7,
at Estes Cemetery in Coalfield. The family requests that any memorials be in
the form of donations to the New Heart Society, 1336 Scottsberry Circle,
Knoxville, TN 37919.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the church.

SAMUEL ALLEN REYNOLDS, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at
Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Dec. 5, 1921, in Camp Knox, Ky., now Fort
Knox, he was the only child of Maj. Melvin and Evelyn Pearl McFarland
Reynolds. He grew up in Fort McPherson near Atlanta, Ga., and graduated from
Emory University in 1942 at the age of 20. Mr. Reynolds did his postgraduate
work at the University of Tennessee. He and his wife, Mary Louise Brown
Reynolds, who survives him, first met in high school. They were married Oct.
5 1942, in Wahalla, S.C. He came to Oak Ridge in March 1944. His family said
he was one of the earliest chemists to work on the Manhattan Project. He
worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, initially called X-10, until he
retired in January 1981. Mr. Reynolds taught seminars for 23 years. His
students included the officers of the first nuclear-powered surface ship and
the first nuclear-powered submarine. For 58 years, he lived on Kingfisher
Lane. Mr. Reynolds was a member of First Baptist Church and also belonged to
several scientific organizations. Classical music and traveling were among
his main interests. In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by
two sons, Thomas Melvin Reynolds and his wife, Adela, of Miami, Fla., and
David Alan Reynolds and his wife, Devola, of Newburgh, Ind.; three
grandchildren, Christina Reynolds Hernandez and Samuel Thomas Reynolds, both
of Miami, and Jason Alan Reynolds of Newburgh; and two great-grandchildren,
Michael Christopher and Julie Kate Hernandez of Miami. The funeral will be
held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral
Home with the Rev. Larry Dipboye officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of
donations to the United Parkinson Foundation, 360 W. Superior Street,
Chicago, IL 60610; or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family will
receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

ROBERT ALLEN SWEITZER, 66, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a short illness with cancer.
Born Nov. 26, 1935, in Saberton, W.Va., he was the son of Wade M. and Ethel
M. Campbell Sweitzer. His mother died in 1990 and his father died in
September 2001. In 1935 the family moved to Ohio, where Mr. Sweitzer
graduated from Vernon High School in 1953. He then joined the United States
Army and served from 1953 to 1956 in Asia during the Korean War. He and his
wife, Joan E. Ashe Sweitzer, who survives him, were married on Dec. 3, 1955.
While in Ohio, they were active members of the Mecca Community Church. Mr.
Sweitzer served the church as a board member and as a member of the
missionary team. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Hiram College in
1980. He was employed at Packard Electric Division of General Motors for 27
years. He retired as senior construction representative of the Peer Group in
1991. After retirement, the Sweitzers moved to Spring City. Mr. Sweitzer was
president of the board of directors of the Audrey Pack Library, where he and
his wife worked to obtain library funding, oversee remodeling and acquire
computer systems to revamp the library. In 1999, they moved to Oak Ridge. He
was a member of Chapter 1684 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
in Oak Ridge. In addition to his wife, Mr. Sweitzer is survived by four sons,
Robert Sweitzer and his wife, Patti, of Spring City, Keith Sweitzer and his
wife, Dianne, of Cortland, Ohio, Brian Sweitzer of Cleveland, Ohio, and Kirk
Sweitzer and his wife, Kay, of Hixson; three sisters, Arlene Mitchell and her
husband, William, of Kinsman, Ohio, Linda Allen and her husband, David, of
Palm Harbor, Fla., and Kathy Dunbar and her husband, Kenneth, of Cortland;
two brothers, Randall Sweitzer and Glenn Sweitzer, both of Kinsman; and 10
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his
sister-in-law, Dorothy Sweitzer of Yucaipa, Calif.; his maternal aunt, Pearl
Standley of Sharon, Pa.; and his paternal aunt, Mary Sweitzer of Monterey,
Va. Besides his parents, Mr. Sweitzer was preceded in death by two other
brothers, Donald Sweitzer and Tommy Sweitzer.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the chapel of
Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St. SE, Kinsman, Ohio. The Rev. Charles
Kindle will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kinsman Cemetery. The family
requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Audrey Pack
Memorial Library, Spring City, TN 37381; or Methodist Medical Foundation,
P.O. Box 2529, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-2529. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is
handling local arrangements.

VIVIAN TURNER, 74, of Dandridge, formerly of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, May
5, 2002, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City.
Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs is handling the arrangements, which were
incomplete this morning.
