BAILEY, STEVEN - age 39, a resident of Oliver Springs, Tenn., passed away
Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Funeral
arrangements are incomplete at this time. Sharp Funeral Home, in charge of
arrangements.
EPPERSON, PFC. JOHN HENRY - age 78, born August 9, 1923, in Wise County, VA,
passed away April 29, 2002 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. Veteran
of World War II Headquarters Company 874th Engineer Aviation Battalion
stationed in New Guinea Luzon (Pacific Islands). Decorations and citations:
World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Metal, AP Theater Ribbon and 2
Bronze Service Stars. Philippine Liberation Ribbon and on Bronze Star G0 23
Hg ISAFFE-45. Long time merchant and restaurant owner for over 30 years in
the Red House Community. Preceded in death by: father & mother, Harrison &
Bessie Epperson of the Red House Community in Blaine; brother, Jack Epperson;
nephew, Eddie Epperson. Survivors are: wife of 43 years, Minnie Kee Epperson;
daughter & son-in-law, Sue & David Trammel of Oliver Springs; 3 grandsons,
Shawn Brown & wife Ashley of Blaine, Danny Collins & wife Tammy of Bean
Station, Travis Collins & wife Sabrina of Oliver Springs; step granddaughter,
Pamela Trammel Wells & husband James of Harriman; 3 great granddaughters,
Katelyn Collins, Sara Patterson, and Camilla Brown; 2 step great grandsons,
Mitchell & Tyler Brogan; and numerous cousins in Claiborne County. Special
thanks to the wonderful doctors & staff at St. Mary's Medical Center, special
thanks to family friend Keri Wylie Joyce. A special thanks for all the
prayers & support during his illness & death. Funeral services will be 8 p.m.
Wednesday, May 1, 2002 in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny
Meyers officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the
Epperson Cemetery in Claiborne Co. Full military honors will be conducted by
The East Tennessee Veteran's Honor Guard. The family will receive friends
Wednesday 6-8 p.m. prior to the service. Arrangements by Smith Funeral Home
in Rutledge.
LEES, ERNEST MERWIN - age 80, of Oak Ridge, passed away suddenly at his home
Monday, April 29, 2002. Ernie was born January 21, 1922, in Jamestown, North
Dakota, to the late Norman and Nellie J. Lees. He attended a one room country
school in Dickey County, N.D. The family farm was so far from town and North
Dakota weather so harsh that he had to leave home very young and move to
Ellendale and board just to attend high school. He graduated from Ellendale
High School and the University of North Dakota School of Engineering and
Mines. In college, he lived with 4 other students in a converted train
caboose in a community called "Camp Depression". A monument has been erected
to mark this historic site on campus. Ernie worked five jobs at once while at
the same time attending college. Before graduation, he was recruited to come
to work in Oak Ridge. Immediately upon graduating in 1943, he began working
for Eastman Kodak. He then worked at Y-12 as an electrical engineer in the
Reactor Development group, retiring in the mid 80's. He was a charter member
of the "43 Club". After retirement he traveled extensively, served as a Court
Monitor and on the Board of RID. He enjoyed lunch on Fridays with former co-
workers. He was very active in Parkway Presbyterian Church in Knoxville. He
was a devoted Father, Husband, Grandfather, Brother, Neighbor, and Friend and
will be missed by all. Preceded in death by first wife, Mildred Woody Lees;
daughter, Elizabeth James Maney, and very special son-in-law Howard Maney.
Ernie is survived by wife, Charlotte O'Briant Shiflett Lees; sister and
brother-in-law, Janet and Ray Mork of Billings, Mt.; beloved grandchildren,
Shari LaStarza, Robyn Aiken and husband Michael, and Jon Maney, all of
Florida, and great-grandchildren, Brianne and Mikaela Aiken, and Christopher
LaStarza; devoted stepchildren, John and Connie Wallace, David and Rebecca
Shiflett, Lis and Budde Wolfe, Dean and Sarah Shiflett, and grandchildren,
Taylor and Rob Wallace, Helen and Henry Shiflett, Bradley and Alice Shiflett,
all of Knoxville; seven nieces and nephews and 14 great nieces and nephews;
cousin, Charles Russell of North Dakota. A Memorial Celebration of Ernie's
life will be held at Parkway Presbyterian Church, Thursday, May 2, 2002, at
7:00 p.m. with Rev. Gordon Adams officiating. The family will receive friends
from 6-7 p.m. at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks, donations
be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church, 920 Sanctuary Lane, Knoxville, TN
37932, or the American Heart Association, 4708 Papermill Drive, Knoxville, TN
37909. In keeping with Ernie's wishes, he will be cremated and burial will be
private. Weatherford Mortuary, of Oak Ridge, in charge of arrangements.
PARSLY, LEWIS F. - 84, of Oak Ridge passed away Monday April 29, 2002 at
Briarcliff Health Care in Oak Ridge. Husband of the late Marjorie Parsly and
the father of James A. Parsly, Knoxville. The family will receive friends
Thursday, May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home, 1017
Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, with funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday May 3,
at St. Stephens Episcopal Church with interment following at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home in Charge of arrangements.
PHILLIPS, MRS. JANE DILLON - age 57, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2002
following an extended battle with cancer. Jane was a loving wife, daughter,
sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Jane loved her family and friends
and made them the focal point of her life. She enjoyed travel, photography,
gardening and doing things for others. She was employed by E.G. and G. Ortec
in the Purchasing Department for twenty-eight years. Jane was preceded in
death by: her father, John R. Dillon and father-in-law, Jesse E. Phillips
both of Wartburg, TN. Survived by: her loving husband of 38 years, Charles
Phillips, Oak Ridge; sons, Jeff Phillips and wife Heather of Oak Ridge, John
Phillips and wife Michelle of Cordova, TN; grandsons, Christopher and Cole
Phillips; mother, Mildred Hart Dillon, Wartburg; brother, Bobby Dillon of
Wartburg; sister, Nancy Cross of Nashville; mother-in-law, Macel Phillips of
Wartburg; and numerous cherished friends. Funeral services will be held
Thursday evening, May 2, 2002, 8 p.m. Schubert Funeral Home Chapel, Wartburg,
with Rev. Tom Mooty officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8
p.m. Thursday evening at the Schubert Funeral Home, Wartburg. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber
Road, Knoxville, TN 37909. Jane, your life was a gift to us all.
TINKER, SANDRA F. - age 45, a resident of Coalfield, passed away Monday,
April 29, 2002 at her home. She was preceded in death by: her father, Joseph
Sanford Tinker; and a brother, James "BIM" Tinker. Survivors: mother, Jean
Tinker of Coalfield; brothers, Arthur Tinker and wife Nancy of Fayetteville,
NC, Joseph D. Tinker of Coalfield; sister, Susan Tinker of Knoxville. Miss
Tinker was born August 20, 1956 in Oak Ridge. She has lived in Coalfield all
of her life. She was graduated from the Coalfield High School as a honor
student in 1974. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at 8:00
p.m. in the Chapel of Sharp Funeral Home with Rev. Don Daugherty officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00
p.m. at the funeral home. Burial and graveside services will be held
Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Anderson Memorial Gardens. Sharp
Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
