Mother of Martha Salk
ALICE ALEXANDER LEPAY SCHEER of Oak Ridge died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at
Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville after a short illness.
Born June 16, 1920, in Binghamton, N.Y., she was the daughter of Mary Nester
Lepay and Paul Lepay, who are deceased.
Mrs. Scheer received her bachelor of science degree in dietetics from Wayne
State University in 1942, and a master of arts degree in teaching from
Eastern Michigan University. She taught second grade in Allen Park, Mich.,
for 20 years before retiring to Oak Ridge in 1978.
Her family said she loved cats, food and her grandchildren. Her oldest
grandchild, Carl, described her as "the perfect grandmother: Indulgent,
generous, loving and ever ready with cookies." According to her family, her
love of cats was carried to the extreme in that she was known to covet those
of her neighbors and permanently "borrowed" several by the generous
application of the most tempting cat food she could find. The neighbors and
the cats generally delighted in this arrangement, her family said.
Mrs. Scheer was born in a Slavic neighborhood in Binghamton and spoke Russian
before English. Her family said time eroded her ability to speak that
language, and she spent a lifetime "studying" Russian.
She was noted for her generosity, and after her daughter left for college in
1963, she took in the daughters and younger sisters of friends and co-workers
who, by reason of one tragedy or another, needed a place to live during late
adolescence.
Mrs. Scheer had dealt with high blood pressure, diabetes, severe arthritis,
osteoporosis, a broken vertebra, a pituitary tumor, hearing loss, reduced
vision, etc., by ignoring them and not taking them seriously, her family
said, adding that it was a strategy, though breathtaking to them, that gave
her an astounding ease and peace.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick August Scheer, also of Shannondale;
three brothers, Peter Lepay and his wife, Anne, of Virginia Beach, Va.,
Andrew Lepay of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Walter Lepay of Binghamton; two
children, Martha Scheer Salk and her husband, Gary, of Oak Ridge, and Jon
Scheer and his wife, Teva, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and her grandchildren,
Carl Salk and Ted Salk, both of Oak Ridge, and Catherine Scheer and Charles
Scheer, both of Highlands Ranch.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in the
chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
YWCA of Oak Ridge, 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
