Mr. Wickham was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Montgomery County. He was the youngest

He served eight years in the U.S. Navy, most of that time aboard destroyers.
During World War II, he was assigned to duty escorting convoys in the North
Atlantic.

retirement in 1981.
In 1973, he purchased the log cabin in which he was born, located on East
Fork of Yellow Creek in western Montgomery County. The cabin dated from the
late 18th century. With the help of family and friends, Mr. Wickham and his
wife, Josephine Plant Gearhiser Wickham, restored the cabin and grounds to a
"showplace" that the rural community neighborhood was proud of. During their
retirement years, they spent many pleasurable times there enjoying numerous
pursuits and hobbies.
Mrs. Wickham died in 1997. The couple had been married for 54 years at the
time of her death.
Mr. Wickham is survived by two sons, Charles Joseph Gearhiser Jr. and his
wife, Joyce, of Chattanooga, and Lee Plant Wickham and his friend, Andra
Brothers, of Oak Ridge; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren,
all of whom loved him very dearly, the family said.
Bill and Alma Lewis of Cunningham were considered special friends.
At Mr. Wickham's request, the body was cremated. The remains will be buried
at Myer's Cemetery, located across the creek from Mr. Wickham's birthplace on
East Fork Creek. The graveside service will be private.

cancer research fund or foundation.
