James lamar "Boody" hunt, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at
NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.
Born June 21, 1911, in Riceville, Tenn., he was the son of John Lee and Alice
Matilda Rose Hunt.
Mr. Hunt was a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, having moved here in the
1940s.
He served for two years in the U.S. Army during World War II, then returned
to Oak Ridge.
He retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Corp. after 30 years as an ironworker
at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Described as a devoted member of Central Baptist Church, Mr. Hunt had served
as a past worshipful master of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756.
He enjoyed football, especially the University of Tennessee Volunteers and
the Oak Ridge High School Wildcats. He also enjoyed gardening and working in
his yard.
Mr. Hunt is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wynette Barnes Hunt; two sons,
Johnny Lamar Hunt of Clinton and Jerry Barnes Hunt of Oak Ridge; and a
grandson, John Lamar Hunt of Indianapolis, Ind.
He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Daugherty Hunt of
Charleston, Tenn., Grace Barnes of Benton and Merle Clark and her husband,
Dave, of Oak Ridge; a brother-in-law, Harold Barnes and his wife, Louise, of
Maryville; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters, Jennings Hunt and
Beulah Mae Hunt McAlister, both of Charleston, Tenn., and Virtle Hunt Boyer
of Cleveland, Tenn.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at
Weatherford Mortuary. A Masonic service will be conducted at 8 p.m., and the
funeral, with the Rev. Richard Feist officiating, will be held at 8:15 p.m.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
Gordan lynn byrd, 62, of Roanoke, Va., died Monday, July 23, 2001, in
Roanoke.
Mr. Byrd was born Oct. 9, 1938, in Knoxville, the son of Ben H. and Virgie
Byrd, who are deceased.
He was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School and of Lincoln Memorial
University.
Mr. Byrd had worked for 31 years for Norfolk-Southen Railroad as a regional
manager of claims.
He was a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church in Roanoke. He was an
avid golfer. His family said he loved his family and friends and will be
missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan Shipley Byrd; his sons,
Gregory Alan Byrd and John Gordon "Chip" Byrd and his wife, Pamela; his
daughter, Joly Marshall and her husband, Joe; and five grandchildren, Leah
Byrd, Rachel Byrd, Adam Byrd, Benjamin Byrd and Hunter Marshall.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, July 25, in the South Chapel of
Oakey's Funeral Home in Roanoke with the Rev. Rick Geoghegan officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at East
Lawn Memorial Park in Kingsport.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Cave
Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive SW, Roanoke, VA 24018; or to
the Special Olympics.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home.
The Rev. ALVIE H. "Tom" GOUGH, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Monday, July 23,
2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Nov. 13, 1918, in Coalfield, he was the son of Harvey C. Gouge and Sadie
McGlothin Gouge. He had lived in Kentucky and Virginia before moving back to
Tennessee in 1943.
He had served as the pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Clinton for 24 years
and as pastor of Mount Peran Baptist Church in Jacksboro.
Mr. Gouge retired in 1980 from the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant after 32 years of
service.
Mr. Gough was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Burgess Gough; his daughter,
Sherry Konopka and her husband, Joe, of Oliver Springs; and his
grandchildren, Leigh-Anna Konopka of Redlands, Calif., Dana Baas of Seattle,
Wash., Anna DeWitt of Yuba City, Calif., Ginger Hamblin of Alaska and Jeree
Sharp of Denver, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gough is also survived by his brother, Richard Gouge and his wife,
Minnie, of Coalfield; his sisters, Ruth McCarty and Nora West and her
husband, Jesse, all of Springfield, Ohio, and Betty Patterson and her
husband, Virgil, of Deer Lodge; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two other children,
Iris Yvonne Gough and Jerry Gough, two other brothers, Algie Gough, and H.C.
Gouge, and two sisters, Ester Phillips and Dorothy Sellers.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Mount Pisgah Baptist
Church. C.S. Harvey, the Rev. Marty Stooksbury, the Rev. Keith Price and the
Rev. Garvan Walls will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Davis
Cemetery in Coalfield with the Rev. Will Gouge and the Rev. Keith Price
officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Mount
Pisgah Bible Print Ministry, 115 Old Hen Valley Road, Oliver Springs, TN
37840.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs is handling arrangements.
ERNEST LAWS LONG Jr., 69, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at his
home.
Born Aug. 12, 1931, in Memphis, he was the son of Ernest L. Long Sr. and Nina
Murphy Long, who are deceased. He was a graduate of the University of
Tennessee and held a degree in chemical engineering.
He retired in 1996 as a chemical engineer in the Metals and Ceramics Division
of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1975-1976, Mr. Long was part of a work
exchange program at ORNL, and he and his family moved to Julich, Germany, for
the year. His family said he enjoyed working with computers.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Wilma Wynn Long; three sons, Thomas W. Long
and his wife, Kathy, and their son, Zach, all of Atlanta, Ga., Donald R. Long
and his special friend, Jeanne Frederick, of Oak Ridge, and James B. Long and
his wife, Jerol, and their children, Hanna and Emily, all of Oceanside,
Calif.; and his daughter, Rebecca L. Libby and her husband, H. Wayne, and
their daughter, Stephanie, all of Oak Ridge.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park with Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to a
charity of the donor's choice.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at
Weatherford Mortuary.
JAMES HARVE GOLDEN, 90, of Lake City, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Baptist
Hospital in Knoxville.
Born Nov. 15, 1910, in Norris, he was the son of Jim and Martha Golden.
He was a retired welder from Rust Engineering.
Mr. Golden was a member of Island Ford Baptist Church in Heiskell. His family
described him as a very loving husband, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather who loved his family and God very much. They said he was
loved by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alma Bennett Golden; his daughters,
Amy Vowell of Clinton and Jeanne Carden and her husband, J.C., Kathy Dugger
and her husband, Paul, and Becky James and her husband, Darris "Rabbit"
James, all of Lake City; and his sons, Jimmy Golden and his wife, Cheryl, of
Independence, Ky., Joe Mac Golden and his wife, Anna, of Goshen, Ohio, and
Terry Golden and his wife, Kim, of Clinton.
Mr. Golden is also survived by his brothers, Leon Golden and his wife,
Delores, and Hobert Golden and his wife, Lois, all of Clinton; his
sister-in-law, Louise Golden of Clinton; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law
he considered special, Luster and Linda Bennett Jones of Clinton; and by 21
grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and
sisters.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, July 25, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Charles Harness and the
Rev. Rick Teague officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at Island
Ford Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
