Dr. SAMUEL GARDNER RANKIN, 86, of 77 Outer Drive, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday,
July 21, 2001, at his home following a long illness.
Dr. Rankin was a retired Southern Baptist medical missionary, having served
in both China and Hong Kong. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak
Ridge.
He was born April 23, 1915, in Sandy Hook, Miss., a son of Solomon Jesse and
Emma Estelle Thornhill Rankin. He received his medical degree from Louisiana
State University School of Medicine in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II as assistant surgeon on the USS Grimes, and was resident
physician at Grace Hospital, Richmond, Va., from 1946 to 1947.
Dr. Rankin began his medical mission work as a staff doctor at Stout Memorial
Hospital in Wuchow, China, from 1948 to 1949. After the Communist takeover of
China, he held a private practice in Bamberg, S.C., until he was appointed to
Hong Kong in 1955.
He opened Hong Kong Baptist Clinic in 1956, and was instrumental in the
founding and growth of Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, where he had many fruitful
years until his retirement from missionary service in 1971.
He worked in medical practice with Dr. Ridgeway in Akron, Pa., from 1971 to
1973, and with Dr. Thomas E. Jenkins, in Laurens, S.C., from 1973 to 1986.
Dr. Rankin was married to Miriam Elizabeth Thomas Rankin from 1946 until her
death in 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Irene Daniel Keller Rankin; his
daughters, Harriet Ann White and her husband, Richard Lee White, of Armuchee,
Ga., and Margaret Ellen Downie and her husband, John Joseph Downie Jr., of
Bogart, Ga.; his son, Samuel Edward Rankin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three
granddaughters, Alice Elizabeth White of Armuchee and Heather Elizabeth
Downie and Anna Kathleen Downie, both of Bogart; and two grandsons, John
Joseph Downie III of San Diego, Calif., and Samuel Jeremiah Downie of Bogart.
Dr. Rankin is also survived by his sister, Annie Lou "Sue" Pope of
Mandeville, La.; his brother, Charles Paul Rankin and his wife, Marie Rankin,
of Columbia, Miss.; and a number of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-laws, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at First Baptist Church
of Oak Ridge, with Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at
Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley, S.C.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations either to
First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN, 37830; or to
the American Heart Association, Anderson County Unit, P.O. Box 6014, Oak
Ridge, TN 37831.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
PEARL J. WOODS, 81, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at her
home.
Born April 2, 1920, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of Howard Edward
Martin and Myrtle Leinart Martin. She had lived most of her life in Anderson
County.
Mrs. Woods was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in
Oliver Springs. Her family said she enjoyed quilting.
She was the widow of Fred Woods.
Mrs. Woods is survived by her sons, John Woods and his wife, Lisa, of
Coalfield, Wayne Woods and his wife, Linda, of Clinton, and Danny Woods and
his wife, Billie, of Oak Ridge; and her daughters, Susie Woods and Bobbie
Jean Woods and her husband, Keith Davis, all of Clinton, Edna Tedford and her
husband, Randy, and Betty Adkins and her husband, Curtis, all of Oak Ridge,
and Novella Hazelwood and her husband, Jerry, of Blues Creek, N.C.
She is also survived by four brothers, Lonas Martin of Lake City, Earl Martin
of Jacksboro, John L. Martin of Michigan and Howard Martin of Hammond, Ind.;
and by 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mazel Phillips, Bill and Pearl Wilson and the Rev. Steve McDonald were
considered special friends.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Woods was preceded in death
by two sons, Lester Woods and J.C. "Jay" Woods.
The funeral was held Sunday night, July 22, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral
Home in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Steve McDonald and the Rev. Garvan Walls
officiated.
A graveside service was to be conducted at 11 this morning, July 23, at Mount
Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.
ADOLPH EDMUND SLOBODZINSKI, 81, of Knoxville, died Saturday, July 21, 2001,
at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Slobodzinski was born July 7, 1920, in New York, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army
Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a 1953 graduate of the Polytechnic
Institute of Brooklyn and held a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
He retired as a composite engineer for the Armament Research, Development and
Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J., where he had been
employed for 33 years. He was widely published in composites, his field of
expertise.
In New Jersey, Mr. Slobodzinski was a member of the Sparta Ambulance squad
for 30 years and a trustee of the Lake Mohawk Country Club and he received
fourth-degree honors from the Knights of Columbus.
He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Clinton.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Slobodzinski; his daughters, Patricia
Lane and her husband, Randall, of Charlotte, N.C., Susan Demarest and her
husband, Edward, of Hope, N.J., and Theresa Michalowicz and her husband,
Marc, of Park Ridge, N.J.; his son, Thomas Edmund and his wife, Cathy, of
Evergreen, Colo.; his stepchildren, Allen J. and Wanda Mulligan and Joseph
and Patricia Neyhart, all of Knoxville; and by 11 grandchildren, five
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Slobodzinski was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Slobodzinski.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at St. Therese
Catholic Church in Clinton with the Rev. Gerard Finucane officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tennessee Veterans
Cemetery in Knoxville. Members of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard
will conduct full military rites.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
GERTRUDE "Gertie" COLLINS SHARPE, 94, of Andersonville, died Friday, July 20,
2001, at Hillcrest North Nursing Home in Knoxville.
Mrs. Sharpe was born Aug. 27, 1906, in Campbell County. She was a member of
Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Andersonville.
She was the widow of Roscoe R. Sharpe, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Sharpe is survived by her sons, Billie Sharpe of Andersonville, R.J.
Sharpe and his wife, Aileen, of Knoxville and Fredric Sharpe and his wife,
Katrinka, of South Pittsburg, Tenn.; her brother, Virgil Collins of
Murfreesboro; and her sisters, Lois Stokes of Clinton, Estella Melton of
Andersonville and Evelyn Wilson of Oliver Springs.
Mrs. Sharpe is also survived by her grandchildren, Mark Sharpe and Tami
Taylor, both of Knoxville, Tim Sharpe of Gautier, Miss., Robert Sharpe and
David Sharpe, both of Chattanooga, and Curtis Sharpe of South Pittsburg; and
by 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by another son, Gwen E.
Sharpe; three other brothers, Homer Collins, Hobart Collins and Goebol
Collins; two other sisters, Goldie Ridenour and Verdie Collins; and a
daughter-in-law, Joyce Jones Sharpe.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Norris
Memorial Gardens in Norris. The Rev. Ken Abbott will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 23, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
JOHN W. LAWSON, 86, of Powell, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at St. Mary's
Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Lawson was a former resident of Lake City and a member of Longfield
Baptist Church in Lake City.
He was a former manager of White Stores and after retirement, worked as a
greeter for Wal-Mart.
He enjoyed poetry, singing gospel songs and gardening. His family described
him as a people person who had a smile for everyone.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 61 years, Thelma Tidwell Lawson; his
daughters, Linda Disney and her husband, Jerry, and Kathy Jones and her
husband, Phil, all of Powell; his brother, Mitt Lawson of Wichita, Kan.; and
two sisters, Alice Alexander of Jackson and Anna Lee Beach of East Liverpool,
Ohio.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dwight Disney, Andrea Disney, Gina
Hunt, Wayne Hunt, Clint Jones, Sarah Jones, Aaron Jones, Laura Jones and
Daniel Jones; and his great-grandchildren, Alysha Disney, Allison Disney,
Preston Disney, Bethany Hunt and Kristin Hunt.
Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his parents, Riley and Rosetta Lawson,
and by a brother and two sisters, Millard Lawson, Margaret Beach and Willie
Broyles.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, July 23, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Phil Jones and the Rev.
Harvey Sherlin will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Oak
Grove Cemetery in Lake City.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
LUTHER T. AGEE of Oak Ridge died Friday, July 20, 2001, in Oak Ridge.
Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, which were
incomplete this morning.
