DONS D. POWERS, 76, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, May 19, at the home of her
son, Jack W. Powers Jr., of Rockwood.
Mrs. Powers was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was the widow of Jack
W. Powers Sr.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Janie Powers, she is survived by
her daughter, Annette Powers, of Oak Ridge; two sisters and two brothers,
Tressie D. Cole, Marie D. Adams, Jacob M. Davenport Jr. and Harold Davenport;
and by two grandchildren, Jack W. Powers III and Keri A. Medina, both of
Atlanta, Ga.
A graveside service was to be held at 2 this afternoon, May 21, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park with the Rev. John Shaw officiating.
Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
ELLA MARIE LINDSAY, 69, of Andersonville, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at St.
Mary's Hospital in Knoxville.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence Lindsay Sr.; her daughter, Helen
Koeder and her husband, Michael, of Andersonville; three sisters, Carrie
Moats and her husband, Clyde, of Lenoir City, Lucille McDaniels and her
husband, Bill, of Knoxville, and Hazel Sherwood of Englewood; a brother, Fred
Crowe and his wife, Loretta, of Andersonville; and four grandcildren.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 21, in the chapel of Anderson
County Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Freddie Bean will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Woodhaven
Memorial Gardens in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
SHIRLEY Y. MCSWAIN, 81, died Friday, April 13, 2001, in Naperville, Ill.
Family members say many of Mrs. McSwain's fondest years were spent in
Knoxville from 1947 to 1958 when her husband, Charlton "Mac" McSwain, worked
for the FBI at Oak Ridge. They retired to Knoxville in 1976.
Mrs. McSwain was active in her church and participated in bridge tournaments.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Cedar Springs
Presbyterian Church, 9132 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. The Rev. Vern Holstad
will preside.
There will be an opportunity to gather after the service. Mrs. McSwain's
children invite those who knew their mother from her "bureau" days, bridge
tournaments, church or for any other reason to attend.
ALMA E. YOUNG, 71, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Young was a member of Central Baptist Church in Bearden. She enjoyed a
long career in the clothing business with Catherine's and as a seamstress.
Her family described her as a loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by four daughters, Linda Rhea of Lenoir City, Teresa Bunjan
of St. Louis, Mo., and Barbara Sherrod and Donna Jo Roy, both of Knoxville;
and seven grandchildren, Angela Smithey, Brian Neilsen, Jon Hurst, Cicely
Brooks, Travis Rhea, Chelsea Brooks and Alex Bunjan.
Mrs. Young is also survived by three sisters, Midge Monroe of Gulfport,
Miss., Faye Waltman of Mobile, Ala., and Bobbie Brazda of Houston, Texas; and
a brother, Robert Entrokin of Hancock County, Miss.
Family and friends are to meet at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Edgewood
Cemetery for a graveside service at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Archie
Fendley officiating.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
Shriner's Children Hospital, 3329 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229-3095,
or to Covenant Hospice, 9000 Executive Park Drive, Suite A-110, Knoxville, TN
37923.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, May 21, at Mann Heritage
chapel of Rose Mortuary, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville.
JOSEPH "Joe" PETER BLACKMON, 47, of Michigan, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at
the University Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., after a short illness.
Mr. Blackmon is survived by his parents, Pete and Brownie Blackmon of Oak
Ridge; and his brother, Mike Blackmon, and his family, wife Debra and
daughters Rachel and Ashley of Kissimmee, Fla.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 21, in the chapel of Weatherford
Mortuary with the Rev. Laurie Jo Cranford officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.
ROBERT MIKE FARNHAM, 49, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his
home.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this
morning.
MELVIN WHITED, 83, of Knoxville, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Fort Sanders
Park West Medical Center at Knoxville.
Mr. Whited a retired as an electrician with Union Carbide Nuclear Division in
Oak Ridge.
He was a Baptist and had attended Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church for
more than 20 years.
Family members said he was an avid golfer at Dead Horse Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife, Rose W. Whited of Knoxville; sons Ray Whited and
his wife, Gay, of Carthage, Danny Whited and his wife, Sharon, of Knoxville
and Gene Whited and his wife, Dee, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; daughters Pat
Schill and her husband, Melvin, of Oak Ridge and Sue Whited of Idaho Falls,
Idaho; and 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Other survivors are sons Dewey Wilkinson and his wife, Betty, of Knoxville
and Bill Wilkinson and his wife, Sharon, of Ten Mile; daughters Charlotte
Butler and her husband, Ed, Lou Dailey and her husband, Skip, Sue McReynolds
and her husband, Jack, Lynda Stancell and her husband, Douglas, and Nancy Cox
and Phyllis Wilkinson, all of Knoxville; a sister, Mae Purvis of Cincinnati,
Ohio; and 32 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Madge Whited.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight at Rose Mortuary, Mann Heritage Chapel,
6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. The Rev. C.V. Duff will officiate.
Family and friends will gather at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Edgewood
Cemetery in Knoxville for a graveside service at 11:30 a.m.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of gifts to Beaver
Ridge United Methodist Church in care of the Fellowship Class, 7753 Oak Ridge
Highway, Oak Ridge, TN. 37931.

IRENE HENDRIX, 90, of LaFollette, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at St. Mary's
Medical Center in LaFollette.
She is survived by four sisters, Daisy Travis of Clinton, Mattie Harvey and
her husband, Corum, of Lake City, and Izeada Parrott and her husband, Hubert,
and Gladys McCulley and her husband, Kenneth, all of LaFollette.
The funeral was held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the chapel of Cox-Martin
Funeral home in Lake City. The Rev. Gene Guyton officiated.
A graveside service was conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 20, at Butler
Cemetery in Oliver Springs.
BRIAN GATES, 35, of Knoxville, died Friday, May 19, 2001, at his home.
Born in Knoxville on March 25, 1066, he was the son of Paul M. and Gail
Bridges Gates, who are deceased.
Mr. Gates had lived in this area all his life.
He was a Baptist. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his
children and friends.
Survivors include a son and two daughters, Aaron Gates, Aleisha Gates and
Ashley Gates, all of Easley, S.C.; a brother, Brett Gates, of Knoxville; and
his grandmother, Georgia Bridges of Norris.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to Linda Wright, Tammy Ousley, Tammy
Duke, and Kim and Rodney Hutchinson for their caring and thoughtfulness.
A memorial service was held Sunday, May 20, in the chapel at Weatherford
Mortuary.
