WILLIE OTIS JOHNSON, 75, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at NHC
HealthCare Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 7, 1925, in
Chicago, Ill., the son of Otis and Virtue McElroy Johnson. He grew up in
Birmingham, Ala., where as a youth he was very active in his church.
He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had lived in Oak Ridge since 1943.
Mr. Johnson was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division as a guard at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. He also worked part-time as a salesman for Fox
Oldsmobile, a job he really enjoyed, according to his family. Mr. Johnson was
a member of Spurgeon Chapel AME Zion Church and a member of Lodge No. 1301 of
the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. His family said he especially
liked being around his friends and also enjoyed target shooting. He is
survived by three sons, Reginald Johnson of Knoxville, Willie Otis Howard of
Oak Ridge and Shannon Johnson of Alcoa; six daughters, Theodoris Scott of
Knoxville, Patricia Howard of New York, N.Y., and Janice Howard, Harriet
Howard, Margaret Odessa Johnson and Rhoda Johnson and her husband, Larry, all
of Oak Ridge; and 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two
great-great-grandchildren and several cousins. Mr. Johnson considered the
late Ray Ball, R.L. Jones, Leroy and R.L. Ayers, Freddie "Lucky" Kirkland,
Lester Fox and Julia Jones as special friends.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. T.L. Mims officiating. Burial will follow
at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

GARNETT WOODROW JOHNSON Sr., 76, of Clinton, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at
Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. Johnson was born May
28, 1924, in Anderson County, the son of William Walter and Iva Huckaby
Johnson, who are deceased. He was retired as a plating specialist with Union
Carbide Nuclear Division. Mr. Johnson attended Black Oak Baptist Church in
Clinton.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Johnson; his children, Diana Brown and her
husband, Benny, of Glenuse, Texas, Garnett Johnson Jr. and Ricky Johnson and
his wife, Lisa, all of Clinton, and Debbie Keck and her husband, Kenneth, of
Oak Ridge; and four grandchildren, Renee Brown, Andrew Brown, Chloe Johnson
and Tucker Johnson. Mr. Johnson is also survived by his sisters, Marie Guy
and Elizabeth Hubner and her husband, Bob, all of Clinton, Maxine James and
her husband, George, of Claxton and Mary Alice Robbins and her husband, M.J.,
of Livingston; his brothers, Edward Johnson and his wife, Margaret, of
Kingston, Norris Johnson and his wife, Lucy, of Arizona, Harlen Johnson and
Vernon Johnson and his wife, Louise, all of Clinton, and Floyd Johnson of
Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by two other brothers, Cecil Johnson and Eugene Johnson.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Bill Dean and the Rev. Larry
Pugh will officiate. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, 460
Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8
tonight, May 11, at the funeral home.

BETTY L. BURDICK, 72, of Powell, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Burdick was a former employee of Oak Ridge Optical. She was born Feb.
11, 1929, in LaFollette and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in
Powell. She was the widow of Myron Burdick.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Powell. Anderson County Funeral Home in Clinton is
handling arrangements.
