WINFRES "Win" DONALD MATHENY, 40, a resident of Oak Ridge all his life, died
Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a
three-year battle with cancer.
Mr. Matheny was born in Oak Ridge on May 21, 1960, the son of William D. and
Mary W. Matheny of Oak Ridge. He was a graduate of the University of
Tennessee and held a bachelor's degree in public administration.
He was a 10-year veteran of the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department and had
achieved the rank of assistant chief.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Matheny is survived by two brothers, Morgan
Samuel Matheny and Matthew M. Matheny, both of Oak Ridge; and two nephews,
Christopher S. Matheny of Oak Ridge and Morgan M. Matheny of Lakeland, Fla.
He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Kathelene Whittaker of
Monterey; and several aunts and uncles including Mabel C. Delon of Charlotte,
N.C., Mary H. Woods of Mesa, Ariz., Arnold L. Matheny of Utica, Ky., Sam
Matheny of Cookeville, and Lucy Robinson, Lessie Hayes, Winifred Casey,
Lucille Buttram and David Whittaker, all of Monterey.
Diane and Karah Ritter of Oak Ridge were considered dear and loving friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at Heritage
Fellowship of Oak Ridge. The Rev. Fred Garmon will officiate.
The family asks that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Marlow
Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Dale Lesniak, 3187 Dutch Valley Road, Clinton,
TN 37716.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 11, at their
home at 102 Mead Lane, Oak Ridge.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.
RUFUS DAUGHERTY, 81, of Briceville, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Fort
Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Daugherty is survived by his wife, Monnie Bell Daugherty; his sons, Joe
Daugherty of Oak Ridge, Howard Daugherty and his wife, Ruby, of Wartburg and
Calvin Daugherty and his wife, Patsy, of Lake City; his daughters, Monie Bean
and her husband, Jack, of Lake City and Nancy Daugherty and her companion,
Alvin McGhee, of Knoxville; his sister, Partella Messamore and her husband,
Andrew, of Clinton; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the
Emily Patterson Cemetery in the New River community with the Rev. Calvin
Braden and the Rev. Steve Grindstaff officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, May 10, and Friday, May
11, at Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City.
FRANK W. HOPSKINS Jr., 82, of Clinton, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Hopkins was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Flying Tigers
of the 14th Air Force.
Born June 1, 1918, in Batavia, Ill., he was the son of Esther and Frank W.
Hopkins Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ernestine Hopkins; his daughter,
Carroll Croes and her husband, John, of Clinton; his granddaughters, Christie
Derrick and her husband, Doug, and Tracey Croes and her fiancé, Scott Wilson;
and three great-granddaughters, Emily Derrick, Evie Derrick and Addie
Derrick, all of Atlanta, Ga.
Mr. Hopkins is also survived by his nephew and nieces, Jim Irby, Sharon Irby
and Angel Irby, all of Seattle, Wash., and Claudia Robertson and Carla
Hopkins, both of Portland, Ore.; his cousins, Paul Johnson of Sacramento,
Calif., and Rose Ann Baringer of Fayetteville, N.C.; and his brother-in-law,
Norvelle Leigh Chamberlain of Mobile, Ala.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Keith
Hopkins, Weldon Hopkins and James Hopkins; his aunts and uncles, Segried
Carlstrand, Anne Johnson, Paul Johnson and Phil Johnson; his father-in-law
and mother-in-law, Ernest and Stella Havard; and his sister-in-law, Celeste
Chamberlain.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Tennessee
Veterans Cemetery on Northshore Drive in Knoxville. Members of the East
Tennessee State Honor Guard will conduct full military rites.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of gifts to the World
War II Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96766, Washington, D.C., 20090-6766.
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.
MABLE IRENE JACKSON, 86, of Decatur, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Athens
Regional Hospital, Athens.
Mrs. Jackson was a native of Oliver Springs. She had also lived in Coalfield
and Ohio.
She was the daughter of Bill and Bessie Walls May, who are deceased, and she
was the widow of Fabe Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her son, Tony Jackson and his wife, Beverly, of
Rossford, Ohio; her brother, Jack May of Decatur; her sisters, Jib Elizabeth
Shearl, Helen France and Mattie Shackleford, all of Decatur; two
grandchildren, Tricia Jackson and Jennifer Verbosky and her husband, Dave;
and two great-grandchildren, Claire Verbosky and Benjamin Verbosky.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the chapel of Bowers
Funeral Home in Decatur. The Rev. Curt Jordan and the Rev. Richard Barnes
will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Estes
Cemetery in Coalfield.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home
in Decatur.
Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs is handling local arrangements.
WILLIE OTIS JOHNSON, 75, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at NHC
HealthCare Center of Oak Ridge.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this
morning.
