E. GERTRUDE KELLY, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Kelly was born Oct. 12, 1917. in Campbell County, the daughter of Jake
W. and Bertha Jane Barley DeMarcus.
She was the office manager of J.C. Penney Co., in Oak Ridge until 1980, when
she retired.
Mrs. Kelly had been a member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary since 1976 and
held many offices including treasurer, trustee and chaplain.
She was the widow of Oscar Kelly, who died Dec. 7, 1980.
Mrs. Kelly is survived by her son, J.S. Kelly and his wife, Bobbi, of
Jackson, Ohio; her daughter, Thelma Kelly Lee of Madison, Ala.; her sister,
Mary DeMarcus Joyal of Florida; her brother, Jake DeMarcus of Ohio; three
grandchildren, Steven Lee of Alabama, and Kathy Sagraves and Brenda Clause,
both of Ohio; and four step-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Prince officiating.
Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens, 640 Oliver Springs Highway,
Clinton.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to
Covenant Hospice, 700 S. Illinois Ave., Suite A-202, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the
mortuary.

LARRY L. WEST, 49, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the
Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Maynardville after a long battle
with cancer.
Mr. West was born May 29, 1951, the son of James A. and Minnie L. Sweet West,
who are deceased.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
He is survived by his sister, J. Darlene Elmore; his brothers, J.D. West and
his wife, Barbara, of Oak Ridge, Victor West and his wife, Angie, and Steve
West and his wife, Mary; and by many other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Mr. West was preceded in death by another sister
and brother, Wanda L. West Riggs and James H. West.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the Tennessee
Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville with the Rev. Victor West and the Rev. Charles
Ogle officiating. Members of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard will
conduct military rites.
Family and friends will meet at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at McCarty Mortuary,
4004 Holston Drive, Knoxville, for a procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers
will be J.R. Tillson, David Cooper, James West, Berney Milligan, Richard
Couret and Ricky Owens.
Family and friends could call at their convenience until 4 this afternoon,
May 1, at the mortuary.

LOLA ELIZABETH MCABEE SMIDDY, 83, of Karns, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Smiddy was born Feb. 5, 1918 in Maryville.
The early part of her life was spent in Briceville, during the time of the
coal-mining boom. Later she, her husband, Walter L. Smiddy, three sons and
her mother, Ida Mae McAbee, came to Oak Ridge. Here, she worked as a waitress
for many years. She also worked at the C & S Laundry for 20 years before
retiring.
She and her husband then moved to Karns where they spent the remainder of
their years. According to the family, the Smiddys enjoyed getting in their
truck and just driving around, visiting people, stores, flea markers, fruit
stands, or just a place to get a good hamburger.
What Mrs. Smiddy enjoyed most was her children and grandchildren. Her family
said she liked to fix them good things to eat and spoil them as much as she
could. She also loved her pet poodles, Coco and Corky. Her family said she
will be missed but that because they believe in life eternal, they take great
joy in the thought of a future reunion.
Mrs. Smiddy and her husband were married for 62 years at the time of his
death.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Reba Smiddy of
Karns, Lewis and Pat Smiddy and Paul and Ruth Smiddy, all of Oak Ridge, and
James and Faye Smiddy of Rossville, Ga.; her sister, Ruth Pauline Olds of
Mount Ranier, Md.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Kent Williams officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 3, at Anderson
Memorial Gardens, 640 Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

EARL RAY MOODY, 63, of Powell, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Moody was employed with Lockheed Martin Energy Systems at the Oak Ridge
Y-12 Plant.
He was born Aug. 27, 1937, in Knox County. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Mr. Moody was a member of Claxton Church of God and served the church as a
deacon for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Moore Moody; his sons, Jeff Moody and his
wife, Sharon, and Kevin Moody and his wife, Tina, all of Heiskell, and Ronnie
Moody and his wife, Sharon, of Cohutta, Ga.; and his daughter, Lisa Foster
and her husband, Harold, of Claxton.
He is also survived by his mother, Grace Moody of Claxton; his brothers,
Ralph Moody, Jerry Moody, Gene Moody and Daniel Moody, all of Claxton; his
sisters, Juanita Shelton of Spokane, Wash., and Sandra Dodson of Louisville,
Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Nathaniel, Chaston, Kellie and Kyra Moody
and Nicole and Ryan Foster; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Moody was preceded in death by his father, J.L. Moody, another son,
Calvin Moody, and two other brothers, James Moody and Jimmy Moody.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 1, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. David Simmons and the Rev. Harold Condra
will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Bells
Campground Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Cassell and the Rev. Rocky Johnson
officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

MAUDE MARY HUNLEY, 82, of Clinton, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Hunley was a member of Blowing Springs Baptist Church in Clinton.
She was the widow of Clifford Hunley and the daughter of John and Etta
Wilson, who are also deceased.
Mrs. Hunley is survived by her daughter, Florence Cundiff of Clinton; her
sisters, Gladys Phillips of Oak Ridge and Bess Feltner and Willowdean Wilson,
both of Clinton; her grandchildren, Paul Purkey and his wife, Kimberly, and
Tim Dopel and his wife, Diane Lopez, all of Clinton; and her
great-grandchildren, Jason Purkey of Ohio, Carrie Cundiff of Halls, Matt
Purkey, Maria Dopel and Sara Hughes, all of Clinton, and Adam Dopel of Oak
Ridge.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by four
brothers, Ernest Wilson, J.R. Wilson, Euless Wilson and Walter Wilson.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 1, in the chapel of Anderson
County Funeral Home in Clinton.
A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Clinch
River Cemetery in the Medford community of Lake City.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

ROBERT THURMAN COBB, 74, of the Solway community in Knox County, died Monday,
April 30, 2001, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Cobb was the son of Hugh and Lula Cobb, who are deceased.
He was a former staff manager for Interstate Life and Accident Insurance Co.
Mr. Cobb was a member of West End Church of God in Solway and a member of the
Beaver Ridge Masonic Lodge No. 366.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Cobb of Texas and Terry Cobb and his wife,
Pat Cobb; his daughter, Sherry Hollifield and her husband, Col. Carlos
Hollifield, of North Carolina; his brother, Dr. J.W. Cobb and his wife, Peggy
Cobb, of Fort Worth, Texas; his grandchildren, Kirk Cobb, Marty Cobb, Jason
Cobb, Jacob Hollifield and Amy Hollifield; four great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
Helen Dale and Abe Manuel were considered dedicated friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cobb was preceded in death by his wife,
CoraBella Cobb, and a sister and three brothers, Grace Norman, Dan Cobb, Ty
Cobb and Macy Cobb.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, May 1, in the chapel of Weaver Funeral
Home, 5815 Western Ave., Knoxville. The Rev. J.B. Caylor and Hugh A. Cobb
will officiate.
Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, for an 11 a.m.
graveside service at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

IRENE FREELS of Oliver Springs died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
