MARTIN LUTHER GARDNER, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at his
home.
Mr. Gardner was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Willis, Va., the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Albert Gardner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and upon
discharge had attained the rank of master sergeant. He held an associate's
degree from Roanoke Business College in Roanoke, Va.
He was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division as a cafeteria supervisor
at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
Mr. Gardner was a member of Highland View Church of Christ, the Elks Lodge
and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His family said he loved to garden and
loved the outdoors.
He is survived by his son, Martin Luther Gardner Jr. and his wife, Simone, of
Powell; his granddaughter, Marie Murray and her husband, Leon, of Frankfort,
Ky.; and his great-granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Murray, also of Frankfort.
Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie H. Gardner, who died
Nov. 16, 2000.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, April 10, in the chapel of Weatherford
Mortuary with minister Martin Pyle officiating.
A private graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
CLARA MAE FULDERSON, 90, of New Orleans, La., died Thursday, April 5, 2001,
in New Orleans.
A former resident of Clinton, Mrs. Fulkerson was a member of Memorial United
Methodist Church and of Timely Topics in Clinton.
She was the widow of Alfred Fulkerson and the daughter of Sawyer Charles and
Flossie Taylor Cross, who are deceased.
Mrs. Fulkerson is survived by her daughter, Ann Loggins and her husband,
John, of Metairie, La.; her granddaughters, Katherine Howard of Houston,
Texas, and Nancy Gonzalez of Chicago, Ill.; and two great-grandchildren, Ruby
Gonzalez and August Gonzalez.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Don Thomas officiating.
Burial will follow at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home.
ELIZABETH "Betty" BALL of Oak Ridge died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.
Ms. Ball was born in Chattanooga and spent her early years in New York City,
where she graduated from Nightingale Banford School for Girls. She attended
Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina, where she
received her bachelor's degree. She did graduate work at the University of
Michigan and at the University of Tennessee.
Ms. Ball was in the U.S. Army from 1959 until 1974, serving in various posts
in the United States and overseas. Ms. Ball achieved the rank of major and
was an officer in the Army Reserve until her retirement.
She was an avid bridge player and world traveler. She was a member of Kappa
Kappa Gamma sorority, Pilot Club International, the Oak Ridge Art Guild, the
Reserve Officers Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her nephew, Robert Ball, and his wife, Elizabeth, and
their daughter, Alexandria.
Ms. Ball was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert P. Ball,
and a brother, Robert Ball.
Friends will be received from 6 to 7:30 tonight, April 10, at Martin Oak
Ridge Funeral Home, with the funeral to immediately follow.
A graveside service for family members only will be held Wednesday morning,
April 11.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
American Cancer Society, c/o Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN
37830.
A reception in celebration of Ms. Ball's life will be held from 4 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday for friends and neighbors at the Oak Ridge Retirement Community,
360 Laboratory Road.
MARSIE NEAL, 71, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Neal is survived by his daughter, Tina Hempling of Belleville, Ill.; his
son, Kenny Neal and his wife, Delonda, of Wartburg; his grandchildren,
Denette Armes of Illinois and Benjamin Neal of Wartburg; his brother, Ardell
Neal of Oak Ridge; and by several nieces and nephews.
His dog Bucky was his faithful companion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Dorcas Neal, his
stepfather, Paul Moore, two other brothers, Glen Neal and Jack Neal, and by
another grandson, Dustin Hempling.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, April 10, in the chapel of Schubert
Funeral Home in Wartburg with the Rev. Don Daugherty officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at
Petros Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
ELIZABETH M. LYONS, 86, of Norton, Va., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at her
home.
Mrs. Lyons was born Jan. 21, 1915, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Verena
and William Ashcraft, who are deceased.
She had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and with the American Red Cross. Mrs.
Lyons worked for government agencies most of her life and retired from the
Credit Bureau of Wise County, Va., in 1977.
She was the widow of Ralph Lyons of Norton, who died in 1950. Her family
described her as a lifelong and devout Catholic and as a loving, devoted
mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Lyons is survived by her daughter, Julie Lyons Miller of Norton,
formerly of Oak Ridge; and by three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren
and many other relatives.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her
sister, Catherine E. Polk, and a brother, William Ashcraft Jr.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at
St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Norton with the Rev. Joseph Facura as
celebrant.
Burial will follow in the American Legion Cemetery in Norton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, April 10, at Hagy &
Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Ave., Norton, Va.
JERRY LYNN PHILLIPS, 40, of Clinton, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Phillips was born Oct. 11, 1960, in Knox County. He was the son of James
and Purn Phillips of Clinton, who survive him.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in
Clinton.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips is survived by his son, Tony
Phillips of Oak Ridge; his sister, Celeste Ivey and her husband, the Rev.
Robert Ivey, of Clinton; his brother, Steven Phillips and his wife, Linda
Phillips, also of Clinton; and his nieces, Madison Ivey, Amanda Phillips and
Andrea Phillips.
Dolly Jacks of Clinton was his fiancée. Her children are Travis and Brandon
Jacks.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the
Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville. The Rev. Larry Pugh and the Rev.
Mack Smith will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, April 10, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
THEODORE J. BUELL, 61, of Shaw Street, Clinton, died Saturday, April 7, 2001,
at his home.
Mr. Buell was born March 11, 1940, in Camden, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Buell; his daughters, Samantha Buell of
Phoenix, Ariz., Amy Cook and her husband, Mitch, of Fateville, Ky., and Mary
House and her husband, Jeff, of Nicholasville, Ky.; his son, Teddy Buell and
his wife, Terri, of Nicholasville; his stepdaughter, Katherine Nichols and
her husband, C.K., of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and his stepsons, Stephen York and
his wife, Donna, of Cookeville and Robert York of Houston, Texas.
He is also survived by his mother, Lida Buell of Camden; his brothers, Paul
Buell and his wife, Eunice, of Richmond, Ind., Larry Buell and his wife,
Carla, and Don Buell and his wife, Wanda, all of Camden, and Mike Buell and
his wife, Bert, of Middletown, Ohio; and 14 grandchildren.
His father, Paul Buell, is deceased.
The family wishes to thank Quality Home Health Care and all of Mr. Buell's
many friends.
A memorial service will be held at 7 tonight, April 10, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Paul Frick and the Rev. Terry
Baker will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at the funeral home.
