PHYLLIS E. STAKES, 60, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge of heart disease.
Mrs. Stakes had been a resident of Oak Ridge for 55 years. She had been
retired since 1994 from the Computing and Telecommunications Division of Oak
Ridge National Laboratory, where she had worked for 23 years. She won
numerous awards and honors for outstanding achievement at work.
She had been active in the AMVETS, and Eagles and Moose lodges, and her
latest favorite activity was golf. Mrs. Stakes also loved NASCAR, the
swimming pool, flowers, reading, and making people laugh. Her family
described her as having an open mind and a loving personality that served as
an example for all.
She is survived by her husband, Hollis Stakes, a 51-year Oak Ridge resident;
her sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Gail Stakes of Harriman and Randy
and Loretta Bruner of Baltimore, Md.; her mother and stepfather, Lura and
Eddie Prewitt of Oak Ridge; her sister, Brenda Joyner of Oak Ridge; and her
brother, Ted Ellis of Richland, Wash.
Mrs. Stakes is also survived by her mother-in-law, Wavel York of Oak Ridge;
her stepdaughter, Michelle Turpin; her step-granddaughters, Sherry Baker and
Karrie Turpin; and her step-great-grandchildren, Megan and Cameron Baker, all
of Oak Ridge; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Hope Wheeler, her father, Ted Ellis,
and her father-in-law, Arthur York, all of Oak Ridge.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with minister David A. Lord officiating.
A small graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at
Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the
mortuary.
ELIZABETH "Betty" BALL of Oak Ridge died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.
Ms. Ball was born in Chattanooga and spent her early years in New York City,
where she graduated from Nightingale Banford School for Girls. She attended
Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina, where she
received her bachelor's degree. She did graduate work at the University of
Michigan and at the University of Tennessee.
Ms. Ball was in the U.S. Army from 1959 until 1974, serving in various posts
in the United States and overseas. Ms. Ball achieved the rank of major and
was an officer in the Army Reserve until her retirement.
She was an avid bridge player and world traveler. She was a member of Kappa
Kappa Gamma sorority, Pilot Club International, the Oak Ridge Art Guild, the
Reserve Officers Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her nephew, Robert Ball, and his wife, Elizabeth, and
their daughter, Alexandria.
Ms. Ball was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert P. Ball,
and a brother, Robert Ball.
The funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the chapel of
Martin-Oak Ridge Funeral Home.
A graveside service for family members only will be held Wednesday morning,
April 11.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
American Cancer Society, c/o Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN
37830.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Ridge
Retirement Community, 360 Laboratory Road.
MILDRED BERNICE "Mimi" TAYLOR WILLIAMS, 90, of Clinton, died Thursday, April
5, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Williams worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton from 1947 until the mill
closed in 1967.
Before retiring, she worked at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville as a
medical technician and at Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital as a psychiatric
aide.
Mrs. Williams loved traveling and worked with Wilson Tours in Clinton
arranging tours. She traveled all over the United States and Canada with
these tours.
She was a member of the American Association of Retired People and the Order
of Eastern Star.
She is survived by her son, Steve Williams and his wife, Susan, of Valrico,
Fla.; and her grandchildren, Whitney Howard and her husband, Mike, of
Carlsbad, N.M., and Johnathan Williams and his wife, Brandi, of Brandon, Fla.
Mrs. Williams is also survived by her brother, William "Bill" Taylor and his
wife, Liz, of Clinton; her nieces, Mary Ann Taylor and Brenda Bradford and
her husband, Joe, all of Knoxville, Carol Yonkey and her husband, Ed, of
Johnson City, and Myra White and her husband, Doyle, of Apopka, Fla.; her
nephew, Phillip Taylor and his wife, Barbara, of Powell; and by seven
grandnieces, four grandnephews and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Roxie Johnson Taylor,
and a sister, Helen Taylor.
The funeral was held Saturday night, April 7, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble
Funeral Home in Clinton.
A graveside service was held Sunday afternoon, April 8, at Taylors Chapel
Cemetery in Clinton.
JOE EDWARD FARLEY, 84, of Clinton, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Farley was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Pennington Gap, Va., the son of Harve
and Lavada Wynn Farley, who are deceased.
In earlier years Mr. Farley was a coal miner, and before retirement, he
worked as a supervisor at Rust Engineering in Oak Ridge.
After retirement, Mr. Farley enjoyed beekeeping and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Leinart Farley; his daughter, Roberta
Campbell and her husband, Morris, of Clinton; his son, Arthur Farley and his
wife, Diane, of Clinton; his grandson, Michael Farley and his wife, Traci, of
Clinton; and his step-grandchildren, Douglas Tipton and Darius Tipton.
Mr. Farley is also survived by his sisters, Effie Goodall of Oak Ridge,
Lottie Disney of Clinton, Mabel Orr of Knoxville and Nell York of
Winston-Salem, N.C.; and by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by another daughter, Jo
Ella Farley, another son, James W. Farley, and another sister, Golden
Copeland.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, April 9, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Donnie Disney
officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at
Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
OLA HACKER, 88, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Hacker was an avid homemaker and enjoyed raising flowers. She was a
member of First Baptist Church of Oliver Springs.
She and her husband, Leonard Hacker, who survives her, would have been
married for 70 years on May 23.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hacker is survived by a daughter, Mary
Bradshaw of Oliver Springs; two sons, Ronnie Hacker and Terry Hacker, also of
Oliver Springs; and seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Mary Blackburn of Oak Ridge and Athyne Baker of Oliver Springs were
considered very special friends.
Mrs. Hacker was preceded in death by her parents, Taylor and Hannah Brock;
three sisters, Lucy Cooper, Mamie Cross and Gracie Daugherty; five brothers,
Homer Brock, Owen Brock, Columbus Brock, Johnny Brock and Arlie Brock; and
her son-in-law, Herbert Bradshaw.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at First Baptist Church
in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Tony Rutherford and the Rev. Larry Duke will
officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at
Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the
Piano Fund at First Baptist Church, 206 Roane St., Oliver Springs, TN 37840.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Oliver Springs Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
THEODORE J. BUELL, 61, of Shaw Street, Clinton, died Saturday, April 7, 2001,
at his home.
Mr. Buell is survived by his wife, Ann Buell; his daughters, Samantha Buell
of Phoenix, Ariz., Amy Cook and her husband, Mitch, of Fateville, Ky., and
Mary House and her husband, Jeff, of Nicholasville, Ky.; his son, Teddy Buell
and his wife, Terri, of Nicholasville; his mother, Lida Buell of Camden,
Ohio; his stepdaughter, Katherine Nichols and her husband, C.K., of
Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and his stepsons, Stephen York and his wife, Donna, of
Cookeville and Robert York of Houston, Texas.
He is also survived by his brothers, Paul Buell and his wife, Eunice, of
Richmond, and Larry Buell and his wife, Carla, and Don Buell and his wife,
Wanda, all of Camden, and Mike Buell and his wife, Bert, of Middletown, Ohio;
and 14 grandchildren.
Mr. Buell was preceded in death by his father, Paul Buell.
The family wishes to thank Quality Home Health Care and all of Mr. Buell's
many friends.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Paul Frick and Terry Baker
will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
