RUTH VAN VLIET SEYFRIED, 88, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday morning, March 24,
2001, at her home of leukemia.
Mrs. Seyfried had been a resident of Oak Ridge for almost 57 years. Born
Christmas Day, 1912, in New York City, she was raised in Demarest, N.J., one
of eight children of James and Isabel Regina Van Vliet, all now deceased.
She moved to Oak Ridge July 4, 1944, to join her husband, Max Paul Seyfried,
who had arrived in Oak Ridge earlier. A chemical engineer, he was a pioneer
in nuclear technology and worked for Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the
former Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He died in 1969.
Mrs. Seyfried's family said that throughout her life, she was known for her
loving spirit, sense of humor and devotion to her family of four children,
their spouses, her 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many friends.
To children of both family and friends, she was known simply as "GiGi",
always showing love and being loved in return.
Mrs. Seyfried loved to cook and often had family and friends in her home. Her
family said holidays were especially happy times for her, particularly
Christmas, when she prepared countless fruitcakes, cookies and other seasonal
favorites. She also preferred a real tree, normally a balsam or spruce, and
traditional decorations like those she enjoyed in childhood.
She had a high level of energy and many marveled at her unselfish nature,
always thinking of others first. "She may have been 88 but she acted like she
was 60," the family quoted one doctor as saying in her last days.
Mrs. Seyfried is survived by her son, Robert E. Seyfried and his wife, Joyce,
of Oak Ridge; and three daughters, Maxine Conner and her husband, Harry,
Linda Haffey and her husband, John, and Brenda Griffith and her husband,
Scotty, all of Oak Ridge.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott Seyfried and his wife,
Nancy, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Michael Seyfried and his wife, Lori, of
Marietta, Ga., Michelle Street and her husband, Mike, of Decatur, Ala., Carol
Hetzel and her husband, David, Kristen Tobler and her husband, Eric, Brittany
Norvell and Ashley Griffith, all of Oak Ridge, Sharon Mulkey and her husband,
Mark, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Karen Prozny and her husband, John, of Newnan,
Ga..
Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Carly Seyfried of
Pembroke Pines, Jay, Drew and Cole Seyfried, all of Marietta, Eli and Carrie
Street, both of Decatur, Ala., Ashley Hetzel, and Haley, Caroline and Hannah
Tobler, all of Oak Ridge, and John, Elizabeth and Matthew Mulkey, all of
Kennesaw; her step-grandson, Stephen Irving and his wife, Betsy, of Farragut;
her stepgreat-grandchildren, Adam and Kelly Irving, both of Farragut; and by
numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, March 26, in the chapel of Weatherford
Mortuary with the Rev. Bill Mooney and the Rev. Charles H. Horne officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
