SEYFRIED, RUTH VAN VLIET - 88, an Oak Ridger for nearly 57 years and the
beloved center of her family, died of Leukemia Saturday morning at her home,
after a brief illness. Born Christmas Day, 1912, in New York City, and raised
in Demarest, New Jersey, Mrs. Seyfried was one of 8 children, now all
deceased, of the late James and Isabel Regina Van Vliet. She moved to Oak
Ridge July 4, 1944, to join her husband, the late Max Paul Seyfried, a
chemical engineer who had arrived in Oak Ridge earlier. Mr. Seyfried, a
nuclear-technology pioneer for Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the former
Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plaint, died in 1969. Throughout her life, Mrs.
Seyfried was known for her loving spirit, sense of humor, and devotion for
her family of four children, their spouses; 10 grandchildren; 16 great
grandchildren; and many friends. To children of both family and friends, she
was simply "GiGi" always showing love and being loved in return. Mrs.
Seyfried loved to cook and often had family and friends in her home. Holidays
were especially happy times, particularly Christmas, where she prepared
countless fruitcakes, cookies, and other seasonal favorites. She always
preferred a real tree, normally a balsam or spruce, and traditional
decorations like those she enjoyed in childhood. Many marveled at her energy
and unselfish nature, always thinking of others first. "She may have been 88,
but she acted like she was 60," one doctor said in her last days. The family
feels blessed that Mrs. Seyfried had good health for most of her life and
lived close to her four children, all Oak Ridgers. She is survived by her
loving family; son, Robert E. Seyfried and wife, Joyce, Oak Ridge; grandson,
Scott Seyfried and wife, Nancy; great granddaughters, Kelsey and Carly
Seyfried, all of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; grandson, Michael Seyfried and wife,
