Framing Family Photographs to Preserve Them

Family photographs are precious keepsakes, and it is common for us
to want to frame and display them. Photographs have several natural
enemies you should keep in mind when deciding whether to display them.
They are sensitive to light, and exposure to direct sunlight can fade
and/or destroy them. They are sensitive to humidity and should always
be kept in a low humidity environment. Finally, they are printed on papers
which may be damaged or compromised by exposure to other acidic
materials. Make a copy of the picture, storing the original in a dark,
dry archival safe place and displaying the copy. If you must display
the original, have it framed with acid-free matting in an archival frame
and use UV-protective glass to shield it from harmful rays. Then, display
the picture out of direct sunlight. This will prolong the life of your
precious ancestors' pictures.
