CRITTENDEN AUBURN 'Crit' BARKER Jr. died at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at
his home.
Mr. Barker was born in Benham, Ky., the son of Crittenden and Melva Barker,
who are deceased. As a youth, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and later
served as a Boy Scout leader.
In 1943 he moved to Oak Ridge as a Tennessee Eastman employee. At the time of
his retirement in 1983, he was a cost engineer with Rust Engineering company
in Oak Ridge.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, the American Association of Cost
Engineers and the Masonic Lodge in Loudon.
Mr. Barker enjoyed playing golf for many years, and he was an avid football
fan.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Barker; his children, Pamela Barker of St.
Augustine, Fla., Debora Lisenbee of Knoxville, Sheree Black and Joy Grubb and
her husband, Scott, all of Oak Ridge, and Bart Black and his wife, Kim, of
Maryville; and by 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Barker is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mildred Joyce Barker of
Oak Ridge and Mildred Barker of Kingsport; his nephews, Robert Burton Barker
and his wife, Edith, and Bill Jack Barker and his wife, Debbie, of Oak Ridge,
and Jim Maxwell of Smith's Grove, Ky.; and by his niece, Linda Barker of Oak
Ridge.
In addition to his parents, 11 brothers and sisters died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Weatherford
Mortuary with the Rev. David McPherson and the Rev. Bob Gray officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 tonight at the mortuary.
CHARLES EDD BRADEN, 57, of Briceville, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Braden was a member of Indian Bluff Baptist Church in Briceville.
He was the son of Charlie C. and Margaret Daugherty Braden, who are deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Hendren Braden; his son, Wally Braden of
Clinton; his stepson, Richard D. Shepherd of Coalfield; his stepdaughter,
Angela M. Schroeder of Clinton; his brother, Cleve Braden of Briceville; and
his sisters, Lula Mae Cox of Jacksboro, Inez Braden of Briceville, Emma Sue
Williams and Nancy Morgan, both of Oliver Springs, and Shelby Jean Duncan,
Mary Randolph and Martha Carroll, all of Briceville.
Mr. Braden is also survived by his grandchildren, Chad Braden and Courtney
Braden, both of Oak Ridge; his step-grandchild, Dylan Lee Schroeder of
Clinton; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, another brother and two other sisters, Lester
Lynn Braden, Blanch Marie Smith and Charlet Braden, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Jan. 22, in the chapel of
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City. The Rev. Tom Byrge and the Rev.
Ernest Ward will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Indian
Bluff Cemetery in Briceville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
CLYDE H. BRADEN, 66, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at NHC
HealthCare of Chattanooga.
Mr. Braden was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Anderson County. A former resident of
the Dutch Valley community of Anderson County, he had lived in Chattanooga
since 1958.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor for the Chattanooga City Schools,
where he had worked for 32 years.
He is survived by his companion of 24 years, Helen Wilcox; his daughters,
Connie Lee of Georgetown, Tenn., Lisa Jackson of Fayette, Ga., and Melinda
Braden of Chattanooga; his son, Larry "Pete" Braden of Georgetown; his
mother, Edna Braden of the Dutch Valley community; and by seven
grandchildren.
Mr. Braden is also survived by his brother, James L. Braden of Dutch Valley;
his sisters, Joyce Kennedy and her husband, Elmer, of Tullahoma, and Shirley
Brock and her husband, Henry, of Dutch Valley; and a half-brother, Paul
Potter and his wife, Sandy, of Delterick, Ill.
Burl Kanipes of Chattanooga was considered a special friend.
Mr. Braden's father, Houston H. Braden, died earlier. Also, three children,
David Braden, Jerry Braden and Linda Braden, and three brothers, Ralph K.
Braden, Gene S. Braden and Wiley Braden, are deceased.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Harold Mullins officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Sulfur
Springs Cemetery of Dutch Valley.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Clarence H. Smith, 83, of the Dossett community near Oak Ridge, died Monday,
Jan. 15, 2001, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Smith was raised in this area and graduated from the old Robertsville
High School in what is now Oak Ridge. He liked to tell people he was born in
Oak Ridge before it became Oak Ridge, his family said.
He was also a graduate of Draughon's Business College in Knoxville.
Born Dec. 21, 1917, in Clinton, he was the son of Theodore and Mollie Godsey
Smith. He served in Army Intelligence in the Pacific from 1938 to 1941.
He was well-known in the area for his wine making and as an editorial
contributor to The Oak Ridger and the Courier-News in Clinton. Mr. Smith had
owned a number of businesses in California, Colorado, Kentucky and Tennessee
during his lifetime. He retired in 1983 as vice president of American
Business Brokers Inc. of Knoxville.
Mr. Smith is survived by his sons, Robert Smith and his wife, Alice, and Gary
Smith and his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Cathy; two brothers, Lawrence
Smith and Cecil Smith; and by five grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
His wife, Doris Lidstrom Smith, preceded him in death. They had been married
for 51 years at the time of her death. Two brothers and a sister, Clyde
Smith, Howard Smith and Thelma Duncan, also died earlier.
The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 20, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge
Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene McNabb officiating.
Burial followed at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
GOLDIE JONES, 81, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the
Life Care Center of Morgan County.
Mrs. Jones was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Anderson County, the daughter of Roland
and Pearlie Melton Jeffers.
She was a homemaker and was the widow of Herbert Jones. She was a member of
Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs and had lived in this area all
of her life.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Roland Jones and his wife, Frances, of
Oliver Springs; her grandson, Jason Jones of Oliver Springs; her stepson,
Casey L. Jones of Union, Mich.; her sisters, Ruthie Tindell of Lake City,
Mossie Dyle of Oak Ridge, Ruby Jefferies of Oliver Springs and Anna Johnson
of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, another sister, Flossie Johnson,
and two brothers, Johnny Jeffers and William Jeffers, are deceased.
The funeral was held Friday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in
Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating.
A graveside service was conducted Saturday, Jan. 20, at Anderson Memorial
Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
ALETA WISE, 86, of Tyler, Texas, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Tyler.
Mrs. Wise was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Texarkana, Ark. She attended Texarkana
public schools and business college in Magnolia, Ark. She had lived in Tyler
for the past five years.
She was a retired tax accountant. She was a former president of Executive
Secretaries Inc. and a member of the Republican Women's Club. Mrs. Wise was a
Presbyterian.
She is survived by her daughters, Frances Roddy of Oak Ridge and Linda Miller
of Tyler; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was to be conducted at 11 this morning, Jan. 22, at
Hillcrest Cemetery in Texarkana.
Brooks Sterling & Garrett Funeral Directors in Tyler handled arrangements.
