MIRACLE, WILLIAM JUSTICE "MIKE" - age 72, of Norris, passed away Thursday,
November 9, 2000 at his residence. He took early retirement from the American
Red Cross in June 1984 after 30 years of service with the organization.
During that period, he supervised Red Cross operations in Charlotte, NC,
Jacksonville & Miami, Fla. as well as undertaking assignments in Europe,
Cuba, Bangladesh & South American. His last assignment before retirement
involved oversight of Red Cross activities in the Washington, DC area
including one of the largest Red Cross Blood Services in the nation. Miracle
was born in Fernandina, Fla. but later lived with his family in Ky. and Tenn.
A graduate of Norris High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of
Tennessee, he taught and coached athletics at the secondary school level and
did graduate study in Educational Administration. He was a veteran of the US
Army serving in 1945-46 and being recalled to duty in 1950-52 where he saw
combat duty in Korea. Always involved in public service, Miracle continued to
be active after his retirement to Sanibel, Fla. in 1984. He was a member of
the Sanibel Planning Commission and was twice Mayor of Sanibel. He is a past
chairman of the Sanibel Public Library and was a member of the vestry of St.
Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church where he also served as Senior
Warden. He was the National President of the Assoc. of American Red Cross
Retirees, as organization dedicated to the welfare of Red Cross retired
personnel. In addition, he was an Executive Committee member of the Lee
County, Fla. Chapter of the Red Cross. In 1993, Miracle and his wife, the
former Barbara Emmons moved back to Norris. He has been a member of the
Norris Library Advisory Committee and a member of the vestry of St. Francis
Episcopal Church in Norris. Preceded in death by parents, Clarence & Mary Ann
Justice Miracle. Born June 5, 1928 in Fernandina, Fla. Survivors: wife, of 51
years, Barbara Emmons Miracle of Norris; daughter, Katherine Lawson &
husband, John of Albany, Ga.; son, W. Charles Miracle & wife, Betty of
Taipei, Taiwan; grandchildren, Andrew, Russell, Allison, Sarah, Arron &
Michael; sisters, Pat Millenbruch of Oak Ridge, Nickie Plante & husband, Joe
of Oak Ridge; several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held 10
a.m. Saturday, November 18th, at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris with
Father Chris Chase officiating. Interment of remains will be in Arlington
National Cemetery, Washington, DC. Memorials may be made to Oak Ridge
American Red Cross 908 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, Tenn. 37830 or to St.
Francis Episcopal Church, 158 West Norris Road, Norris, Tenn. 37828.
