LOTTIE EMMALINE HOVATER KENTof Oak Ridge died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge of complications from pneumonia. She
had been a resident of Briarcliff Health Care Center since May 1999. Mrs.
Kent was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Franklin County, Russellville, Ala., the
daughter of Frank and Martha Hovater. She had lived in Oak Ridge since 1944,
moving here with her husband, Eving C. Kent, in 1944 from Tuscumbia, Ala. The
Kents had been married 31 years at the time of his death in July 1969. She
had been a member of Central Baptist Church since its inception. She was a
Sunday school teacher and active in the singles class in later years. Her
family said she loved her church. Mrs. Kent was also active with the Holiday
Bureau during the past 15 years until her health declined. She enjoyed sewing
and dressed hundreds of dolls each year to be given to needy children and was
known to many as the "Doll Lady." She enjoyed helping the Holiday Bureau give
out toys every year at Christmas, her family said. In addition to sewing, she
liked to quilt, and in earlier years, she enjoyed going fishing with her
husband. Mrs. Kent is survived by her children, Judith Kent of Oak Ridge, Les
Kent and his wife, Jill, of Clinton, Hilard Kent and his wife, Gloria, of
Plant City, Fla., Ron Kent and his wife, Mary, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mel
Kent of Nashville; and by her grandchildren, Leslie Davis, Melissa Kent and
Mary Alison Kent, all of Kennesaw, Ga., Mike Kent of Lutz, Fla., Mark Kent of
Knoxville, Tami Harrison of Knoxville, Kevin Kent of Clinton, and Matthew
Kent of Anaheim, Calif.; and by her great-grandchildren, Warren Davis and
Miah Davis, both of Kennesaw, Chelsea Kent and Michael Kent Jr., both of
Lutz, and Connor Kent, Jordan Barnes and Kent Harrison, all of Knoxville. She
is also survived by her twin sister with whom she was very close, Lora Isbell
and her husband, Cloyace Isbell, of Tuscumbia; two other sisters, Artie
Canada and her husband, Severne Canada, and Mary Pounders and her husband,
Jim Pounders, of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; her brother, Hovah Hovater and his
wife, Meyo, of Tucson; her sisters-in-law, Lois Hovater of Tuscumbia and Jean
Kent Olive of Muscle Shoals; and by many nieces and nephews. Renee Kent,
Mechthild Krendle and Brenda Turner are her former daughters-in-law with whom
she was also very close, her family said. In addition to her husband and
parents, Mrs. Kent's brothers, Freddie Hovater of Russellville, Ala., Zollie
Hovater, Carlon Hovater, Delmer Hovater and Homer Hovater, all of Tuscumbia,
died earlier. Her niece and nephew, Gaylene Hovater and Zollie Hovater Jr.,
are also deceased. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, in the
chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. David McPherson
officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at Anderson
Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton. The family requests that
any memorials be in the form of donations to Central Baptist Church, 130
Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 3730; the Holiday Bureau, P.O. Box 7120, Oak
Ridge, TN 37831-7120; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
