Subject: [TNCAMPBE-L] Question re: History of Campbell Co., TN circa 1870
Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 22:55:16 -0400
In the 1870 Campbell County, TN census, my gg-grandparents are found to be living in the Fincastle area. This is the ONLY census in which I've been able to find this family and it's been pretty difficult trying to gather additional information. So, ... I am wondering if someone might know of any additional documents or books that might give insight to any of the goings-on or people of the Fincastle area in the 1870s time period. Was there a newspaper publication at that time? Does anyone know about publications that might be found at the Campbell County Historical Society that would go back that far? What was the primary occupation of folks in and around the Fincastle area? Since Fincastle seems to be currently situated at the far east corner of Campbell County, could there have been a little bit of back and forth moving between it and a neighboring county? If so, which one might have been more popular?
Just trying to come up with some other means of trying to find my family. The names I'm searching are Mary and Lee (we think short for Leander) BROCK. Both are 38 years old in the 1870 census (born circa 1831/32) and have children named: Cyntha (age 17); William (age 16); John (age 14); and James ~ my g-grandfather (age 12).
Cyntha married William IVEY in Campbell Co., TN in August 1871 and their family is found in the 1880 Campbell County census. William married Love Caroline HOUSLEY and they ended up in the 1900s in Newcomb, Campbell Co., TN. I know nothing about John. James married Sarah Elizabeth IVEY somewhere ~ can't find a record ~ probably around 1875/76 because they list 24 years of marriage in the 1900 Campbell County census.
So, if anyone has ANY ideas whatsover or lives close enough to do some research, I would certainly appreciate it. I'm in Ohio and have no idea when I'd be able to get to Tennessee ~ maybe not until our next BROCK reunion in June 2001. Sure would love to crumble this brick wall before then.
Thanks MUCH!
Donna (Brock) Strong
