PIKE, CRAWFORD DEFATE - age 83, of Clinton, went to be with the Lord on
January 17, 2000 at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was a member of Bethel
Baptist Church in Clinton. Mr. Pike was a veteran of WWII, engaged in many
battles in Okinawa, Iwo Jima. He was with the Marines when Ernie Pyle, a news
reporter was killed. He was a professional baseball player for the New York
Yankees before entering the US Army and later went on to work for Union
Carbide at K-25 from which he retired after 37 years of service. He enjoyed
fishing, hunting, & spending time with his family. He was a loving husband,
father, grandfather, & great grandfather. Preceded in death by parents,
Lindsey Eli & Martha Jane Polly Pike; sisters, Mrs. Bertha Dean, Mrs. Ines
Sanders, Mrs. Versia Mae Weatherbea. Survivors: wife, Erma Woods Pike of
Clinton; daughter and son-in-law, Becky & Scott Rose of Alexandria, Va.;
granddaughter & husband, Shaun & Kevin Taylor of Clinton; great
grandchildren, Cregg & Krysta Taylor of Clinton. The family will receive
friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday January 20, 2000 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in
Clinton with funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Glen
Hall officiating. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 21, 2000 at
Fairview Cemetery in Heiskell. Military honors will be conducted at gravesite
by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of
Clinton in charge of all arrangements.
WHITSON, THURMAN CHESTER "T.C." - age 82, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, January
18, 2000 at his home. Veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army. Retried Lt.
Col. Of the Army Reserve. Retired-Industrial Hygienist/TN Dept. of Labor.
Member of First Baptist Church, American Industrial Hygienist Association,
Knoxville Watercolor Society, and the TN Watercolor Society. Preceded in
death by brothers, Vincent Whitson and Edsel Whitson; sister, Clara Whitson.
Survived by: wife of 56 years, Ernesteen Lewis Whitson of Oak Ridge; son,
Thurman Lewis Whitson and wife Gail of Clinton; daughter, Deborah Deane
Sliski of Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Lucy Mason of Henderson, Ky., Janie Brown of
Monroe, Mich., Minnie Swack of Bowling Green, Ky.; grandchildren, Laurel
Yaste of Oak Ridge, Ashley Whitson and Erin Whitson of Clinton; great
grandchild, Joshua Yaste of Oak Ridge. A memorial service will be held on
Friday, January 21, 2000 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge with
Dr. Larry Dipboye officiating. A private graveside service will be held at
Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1101
Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or to the Oak Ridge Art Center, PO
Box 7005, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-3305. The family will receive friends on
Friday, January 21, 2000 1:30-3 p.m. in the foyer of First Baptist Church.
Weatherford Mortuary in charge of the arrangements.
