Just thought I'd try to solve my brick wall before the new year (ha ha)
:o)
My father-in-law swears his SMITH family came from Smith County, TN.
However, I found his grandfather in Campbell County on the 1850 and 1860
census. His Great grandfather died there in 1839. A curious thing
though is that Overton County was formed from SMITH county and there are
a few SMITHs there with many of the same naming patterns as the rest of
the family and though I have no way to prove it, I believe they may be
somehow related. Without knowing if any of the church records from the
early to mid 1800s survive for Campbell County, I have no hope of
finding the connections. The court house in Jacksboro burned down twice
taking many records with it. Sigh. :o) So on I keep plugging. Just
for gee wiz sakes here is the family....
What I know for sure is Wiley Blount SMITH III (Horse Trader) m. Mary
Frances (Mollie) HATFIELD in Wilkinson Co., GA on Dec 7th 1871. He said
he was born in TN on 26 Apr 1838. I have Mollie's pension papers that
show Wiley joined the 9th Reg. TN, Volunteer Cavalry at Fincastle,
Campbell County, TN.
Now for the supposition. The only Wiley I can find in TN born in
the same year and who was married is Wiley from Campbell County, TN who
during the 1860 census was living with a Martha SMITH in the Household
of John B. CRAVEN, wife Sarah V. Craven(age 15) and William W.
CRAVEN(age 4 months). In the 1850 Census Wiley (age 12) and Rufus
SMITH(age 19) lived with William D. SHARPs family. Next door lived
Martha(age 36) SMITH, Elizabeth E. SMITH(age 7) and Sarah V. SMITH (age
5). From this information I tend to think the Sarah V. SMITH and Sarah
V. CRAVEN are the same person. So maybe Martha is Wiley and Sarah's
mother and John B. CRAVEN is her son-in-law. I couldn't find any of
these people on the 1870 census.
I tried searching for Rufus but can't find him nowhere either. I don't
know if Rufus was a brother to Wiley or not but it seems likely. I
found the following marriage and thought it is a good possibility for
the Wedding of Martha and William (Wiley) SMITH II.
William (Wiley) H. SMITH(Merchant) m. Martha L. ANDERSON in Knoxville,
TN on 31 Dec 1835.
William (Wiley) H. SMITH II is probably the son of William (Wiley)
SMITH of NC who married Lewsy RAWYSTER (Lucy Royster?) on 16 MAR 1797 in
NC and William died in Campbell Co., TN in Late 1939. (His will was
proved in 1840).
My thinking is that maybe Wiley II is brother to George SMITH Sr. of
Overton County, TN.
I would love to find out any mor information on any of these people.
Anybody got any ideas?
