COLLINGSWORTH, CORDELIN SHELBY - age 90, of Greenville, S.C., formerly of
LaFollette, passed away Friday, July 23, 1999. She was of the Baptist faith.
Preceded in death by husband, James Frank Collingsworth and parents, William
Riley and Easter (Berry) Shelby. Survivors: daughters, Rosella Haley,
Hamilton, Ohio, Juanita Payne, Hamilton, Ohio, Georgia Tye, Greenville, S.C.,
Jean Vaughn, Hamilton, Ohio and Jessie Yao, Salam, S.C.; sons, Frank
Collingsworth, Jr. and James H. Collingsworth, both of LaFollette; 14
grandchildren. Funeral service 10 a.m. Monday, July 26, 1999, at Midway
Baptist Church, Rev. Leonard Dabney and Rev. Larry Russell officiating.
Interment to follow in the Kitts Cemetery. The family will receive friends
6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Cross Funeral Home. Arrangements by Cross
Funeral Home.
MARS, CHARLES WILLINGTON - age 84, of Norris, passed away Thursday, July 22,
1999, at Ft. Sanders NHC. Mr. Mars was born Sept. 12, 1915, to the late Jacob
T. and Bessie Miller Mars and was raised in the Fincastle area and Powells
Valley Campbell County. Mr. Mars was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Oak Ridge. Graduate of the Lincoln Memorial University. Mr. Mars
spent more than 33 years in the Air Force in active duty and reserves. During
WWII he was a B-17 bomber pilot and flew a well-known aircraft "The Tennessee
Hillbilly". His plane was shot down in March of 1944, he and his crew
survived and spent 16 month in a POW camp in northern Germany. After 33 years
of dedicated and honorable service to his country, he retired as Lt. Col. In
1975. During his service career he was awarded medals for valor, being
wounded in combat. Mr. Mars was a real estate developer for Mars Real Estate
Co. and had worked developments in East Tennessee and Nashville. The Air
Force remained very dear to him and he never lost his love for flying and
continued to be active in several veteran organizations and air shows. The
mountains and valleys of Tennessee were always very dear to his heart and he
was very proud of his home state-Tennessee. He was a loving and dedicated
father and husband and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors: wife, Ruby Parker Mars of Norris; daughters, Jonnie Gibson and
husband, John of Spring City, Lisa Mars of Norris; sons, Jerry Mars of
Norris, Franklin T. Mars of Oak Ridge, James Mars of Murfreesboro;
grandchildren, Monizue Brawley, Suzzette Mars, Jessie Mars, and Keith Mars;
great-grandchildren, Brittany Grayson, Brandi Grayson, and Brandon Grayson;
several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Lucille Mars of Clinton;
brother-in-law, Jack Bowling of Athens. The family will receive friends from
6-8 p.m. Monday, July 26, 1999, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in the chapel
with Pastor Tony McAfee officiating. Interment will follow in Fin Castle
Cemetery in LaFollette with full military honors. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home
of Lake City in charge of all arrangements.
PECHIN, WILLIAM H. - age 65 of Oak Ridge and a native of Lafayette, IN,
passed away July 23, 1999 at his home. He graduated in 1952 from Jefferson
High School in Lafayette and in 1956, graduated from Purdue University with a
degree in Chemical Engineering. He received his Master's Degree in Nuclear
Engineering from Iowa State and his NBA from U.T. Served 13 years in the Army
reserves of which he was Captain for 11 years. He came to Oak Ridge in 1966
as a Nuclear Engineer for O.R.N.L. from which he retired in 1993. Preceded in
death by wife, Gloria; parents, Robert Eugene and Marybell Pechin; niece,
Mary Field. Survived by: sons and daughter-in-law, David and Julia Pechin of
Jackson, TN and John Richard Pechin of Oak Ridge; daughter and son-in-law,
Amy and Wendell Blair of Harriman; grandchildren, Lindsey and Katie Blair,
and John Frank Pechin; brothers and sisters-in law, Charles and Sharon Pechin
of Rantoull, IL, and Robert E. Jr. and Martha Pechin of Lafayette; sisters
and brothers-in-law, Mary Louise Field of Lafayette and Delores and Norman
Bennett of West Lafayette; father-in-law, Eldon Erwin of West Lafayette;
several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday
at McCarty-Martin's Chapel with the service to follow at 8 p.m. Rev. Richie
Hayes officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park for a 10 a.m. graveside service. Arrangements by
McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.
SIKES, JACQUELINE - age 69, of Clinton, passed away Friday, July 23, 1999, at
Methodist Medical Center. She was a member of Clinton First Baptist Church,
where she worked as an office volunteer. She was also in charge of the Sunday
school office. She worked as a volunteer at South Clinton Elementary School
and Clinton Elementary School, an avid Lady Vol swim team fan and Clinton
High School football fan. She loved gardening. Born Dec. 30, 1929, in Ajo,
Ariz. Preceded in death by husband, L.E. Myers; parents, John and Loretta
Blakey Myers. Survivors: daughters, Ingrid Engel of Atlanta, Ga., Diann Lynn
and husband, Richard of Clinton; grandchildren, Azurdee Engel of Knoxville,
Wesley Lynn and wife, Rebecca of Oak Ridge, Leslea Lynn of Clinton; brother,
Richard Myers of Lexington, Ky.; mother-in-law, Georgia Sikes of Hemphill,
Texas; sister-in-law, Gail Ebner of Richmond, Va.; brother-in-law, Andrew
Sikes of Hull, Texas; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and a host of
friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 26, 1999,
at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Funeral service will be held 2
p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Clinton First Baptist Church. The body will
lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service
at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Clinton. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of
Clinton in charge of all arrangements.
