Subject: [TNCAMPBE-L] HENRY HORACE SUTTON 1842 KY-1903,CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN
Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 20:27:08 +0300
Having just read two queries mentioning the names of people who show on
the census as being part of my great-grandfather's household, I thought
it might be time to try again to make connections via the Campbell
County mailing list.I am seeking to connect with researchers of or
anyone who happens to have any information connected with HENRY HORACE
SUTTON II, son of HENRY
and JANE SUTTON of LOUISVILLE, KY, or his descendents through HELEN
KINCAID
or ELISABETH GREEN, both of CAMPBELL COUNTY, TENNESSEE..
The family story has it that he came to the US from England with his
parents who settled in LOUISVILLE, KY, where they had a plantation. He
fought in the Civil War on the Union side and is said to have returned
to his plantation to free his slaves. After the war, he is said to have
been a surveyor and engineer in CAMPBELL COUNTY, TN..
I have been unable to substantiate most of this story. He is what I have
found out so far.
Henry was actually born in KENTUCKY according to the Louisville KY
Census of 1850. According to information received via a census lookup,
these were the people in the household:
Henry . Sutton ( Henry's father) age 47, pilot, b. NJ (not at home when
census taken
Jane age 35 ( Henry's mother)
Allen age 21 Pilot b. Ohio (b.1829) ( Last name and status in household
not clear.)
Henry H. Age 7 b. KY (b. 1842)
Emaline Emmerson age 15 b. KY ((b. 1835) Status in household not clear.)
Maria age 9 b. Missouri(1841) (Last name and status in household not
clear)
Catharine Mahan? age 19 B. Ireland 1831 ( Status in household not clear)
Henry did enlist in the UNION ARMY. Here is the information which
appears in the
1890 VETERAN SCHEDULE

He married HELEN KINCAID June 13,1865 of FINCASTLE, TN, the daughter of
the prominent JOHN KINCAID II and his second wife, Elisabeth Moss. Her
father, a plantation owner, and an ardent Confederate in an area with
mostly Union sympathies, was murdered in 1865. Henry and Helen lived in
what is now called the KINCAID HOWARD HOME, in FINCASTLE, TN. This
house, which John Kincaid built for Helen's mother, is now on the
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.
These are the people living in his home according to the1870 Census via
a lookup.

W. H. S. Kincaid, was probably Helen's brother, William Harrison Sneed
Kincaid. Born 1854 He died at age 20 in about 1874.
The 1880 Census shows three children.

Helen died soon after this. He had raised fine racehorses which he kept
in the basement of the house ane raced them in Louisville and Georgia.
After Helen's death he allowed the house to get rundown. In 1880, he
sold the house to JOHN BRUMMIT.
About 1883, presumably after Helen's death, he met ELISABETH
GREEN,(February 20, 1867-February 4, 1950) who was 16 at the
time.(According to family sources, she was a playmate of one of his
daughters.)They eloped to Canada and then returned to Tennessee, where
they MARRIED November 28 1886.They lived on a farm near LA FOLLETTE.
They had SEVEN SONS

Descendents of one of these sons still lives on the farmplace, which has
its own cemetery.
