COFFMAN, CHARLIE CLARENCE - age 79, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, January
9, 1999, at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville. He served in the Army during
World War II. He was a member and Deacon at Glenwood Baptist Church in Oak
Ridge, where he worked in the clothes closet and food ministry. He was also
active in Optimist Club in Claxton. He worked at TVA Bull Run Steam Plant in
Claxton. Preceded in death by: parents, James Weaver and Ola Mae Hammonds
Coffman; son, Kemp Coffman. Survivors: wife, Willie Mae Coffman of Claxton;
sons, C.K. and wife, Debra Coffman of Kingsport, J.W. and wife, Mary Coffman
of Decatur, Ill., L.A. and wife, Linda Coffman of Kingston; daughters, Leda
and husband, Don Loope of Claxton, Rose and husband, Larry Bridges of
Corryton; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline
Bryant of Harriman. Funeral services 2:30 p.m., Monday, January 11, 1999, at
Holley-Gamble Chapel with Rev. Glenn Gamble officiating. Interment Monday,
January 11, 1999, following the funeral service at McCarty Woodhaven Cemetery
in Claxton, with full military honors. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m.,
Sunday, January 10, 1999, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
COKRAHME, MRS. VIRGINIA BELL HENSON - age 92, of 321 Goins Ave., Clinton, TN,
died Thursday, January 7, 1999. She was a Unicoi County native, but had lived
in Clinton most of her life. Mrs. Cokrahme was a daughter of the late James
William and Celia Garland Bell. She was a wife and a mother. Mrs. Cokrahme was
a member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton. Other than her parents, she
was preceded in death by: her husbands, Richard W. Henson and William
Cokrahme; two brothers, George Bell and Edward Bell; three sisters, Mrs.
Richard (Bess) Jones, Mrs. Kermit (Minnie) Odom and Mrs. Clea (Gladys)
McKinney; one brother-in-law, Jesse Potter; and one sister-in-law, Birdie
Bell. Survivors include: one son, James Richard (Diana) Henson, Bowden, Ga.;
two daughters, Mrs. James (Celia Bell) Montgomery, Knoxville, Mrs. Don (Betty
Sue) Rogers, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Gene (Hattie) Bell, Unicoi;
one sister, Florence Potter, Johnson City; one sister-in-law, Mrs. George
(Thelma) Bell, Unicoi; five grandsons, Jamie Henson, Ashley Henson, both of
Georgia, Eric (Kala) Rogers, Adam (Dena) Rogers, Chad (Kandi) Rogers, all of
Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Jenny Michelle Montgomery, Norway; two great-
grandchildren, Paden Rogers and Kyra Reed, both of Oklahoma; many nieces and
nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Cokrahme were held 8 p.m., Saturday,
January 9, 1999, from the Erwin Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend Estel
F. Williams officiated. Music was provided by Cindy Odom. Graveside service
and interment will be held at 11:30 a.m., Sunday in the Bell Cemetery,
Limestone Cove community, Unicoi. Nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers
and are requested to assemble at the cemetery by 11 a.m., Sunday. The family
received friends 6-8 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers,
those wishing may make memorials to the Limestone Cove United Methodist
Church, c/o Phyllis Street, Box 448, Unicoi, TN 37692. Mrs. Virginia Cokrahme
was loved by all. Her sweet and gentle nature endeared her to anyone she met.
She was a devoted wife and mother and a Christian example of a Godly woman
leaving a wonderful heritage to her family. She will be deeply missed by all.
Erwin Memorial Funeral Home, 1015 N. Main Ave., Erwin, is in charge of the
arrangements.
HERRELL, DORA J. - age 89, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., passed away Friday, January 8,
1999, at her residence. She was a lifetime member of Zion Baptist Church in
the Claxton community. She worked 30 years at Magnet Mills as a foreman. She
was preceded in death by: husband, Gaines Herrell; and parents, James and
Flora Johnson Herrell. Survivors: son, James D. and wife, Joyce R. Herrell of
Oak Ridge; grandsons, Craig Herrell of Oak Ridge, Jimmy Green of Rutledge,
Tenn., Jack Green of Oak Ridge; granddaughters, Jackie Baird of Claxton,
Patricia and husband, Frank Szczygiel of Oak Ridge; great-grandchildren, Jason
Herrell, Matthew Herrell, Kristen Herrell, all of Claxton, Kris Green of
Knoxville, Katie Green of Alabama, Ross Green of Alabama, Jessica, Carrie
Kelly Szczygiel of Oak Ridge, and Mandy Green of Rutledge; three great, great-
grandchildren; sisters, Alberta Amerine and Maude Rhyne of Clinton, Pearl
Foust of Claxton, Mabel Vandergriff of Birmingham, Ala.; several nieces and
nephews. Funeral services 8 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 1999, at Holley-Gamble
Chapel with Rev. Glen Gamble officiating. Interment 1 p.m., Monday, January
11, 1999, at Zion Baptist Church in Claxton. Family will receive friends 7-8
p.m., Monday at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
HOSKINS, R.C. (DUDLEY) - age 93, died at 1:11 p.m., Friday, January 8, 1999 at
his residence in Clinton. He was a pharmacist, businessman, farmer and
longtime chairman of the Clinton Board of Education. Born Rolland Carvel
Hoskins on March 20, 1905, the son of Delaney Jane Seiber Hoskins and George
Carter Hoskins of the Dutch Valley community of Anderson County. Graduated and
received his pharmacist's license in 1926, from the University of Tennessee
College of Pharmacy in Memphis. Owned and operated various drug stores and
medical equipment businesses in East Tennessee. Primary stores were Hoskins
No. 1 on Market Street, and Hoskins No. 2 on Main Street, both in Clinton, and
Acme Hospital Equipment in Harriman and Loudon. Served as first president of
the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. Member since 1930, of Clinton Civitan Club,
served as president. Served on the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy from 1963 to
1968. Lifetime member of the UT College of Pharmacy Alumni Board of Directors.
In 1984, named Pharmacist of the Year. Co-founder of the Center for Pharmacy
Management and Research at the UT College of Pharmacy. Oldest living
registered pharmacist in the United States. Member of Clinton Board of
Education from 1959 to 1978, served as chairman from 1964 to 1978. Last
surviving member of first Clinton High School football team, served as
captain. Also played basketball at CHS, served as team captain. Served as a
director of Clinton Housing Authority. Member of First Baptist Church,
Clinton. Married 49 years to the former Katherine Jenkins, who survived him.
Other survivors are: four daughters, Kathy Rolland Hoskins of Clinton, Dudley
Jane Bostic of Norris, Sheree Michelle Herbst of Clinton, and Mollie Gaye
Scarbrough of Clinton; sons-in-law, Paul F. (Jenks) Bostic, Keith Herbst and
Rick Scarbrough; nine grandchildren, Steve Stewart II, Jessica Stewart, Keri
Stewart, Jenky Bostic Walker and her husband, Daniel Walker, Mollie M. Bostic,
Tucker Borum, Ryan Herbst, Natalie Scarbrough and Rachel Scarbrough; and a
sister, Thelma Hoskins Sharp of Clinton. He was preceded in death by: his
parents; a brother, Erwin Hoskins; and two sisters, Jessie Denny and Bessie
Teno. Family will receive friends 2-4 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 1999, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The funeral will be 4 p.m., Sunday at
the funeral home. Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, January 11, 1999, in
Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton. Pallbearers will be pharmacists
formerly employed at the Hoskins drug stores and honorary pallbearers will be
the grandsons.
VANRIPER, CHRISTOPHER - died Friday, January 8, 1999, at Fort Sanders Medical
Center. Born on January 19, 1961, the son of Joan VanRiper and the late Thomas
VanRiper. Graduated with high honors from the University of Tennessee and
received the J.D. degree from Memphis State University of Law. An attorney in
the Office of the District Public Defender, 7th Judicial District and Stuart
and VanRiper, Clinton. Survivors include: mother, Joan VanRiper, Oak Ridge;
sister, Claire Geibig and husband, Jack, Knoxville; brothers, Thomas VanRiper
and wife, Rachael Wilson, Clinton, Peter VanRiper and wife, Tania Kandra,
Washington, D.C. Memorials may be made to the Thompson Cancer Survival Center,
1915 White Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916. Services are private. The family will
receive friends tonight, January 10, 1999, from 7-9 p.m., at Weatherford
Mortuary, Oak Ridge.
YORK, OPAL K. - age 77, of Knoxville, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away at
her home, Friday, January 8, 1999. She was a member of West Village Christian
Church. She retired in 1989 from Oak Ridge Associated University. She was
preceded in death by: parents; son, Billy Hicks; two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Terry Mathes of
Knoxville; grandchildren, Ricky and Misty Patterson, Gina and Dale Mashburn,
David Mathes; great-grandchildren, Cory, Breck and Autumn; sister and brother-
in-law, Zena Lee and Hoyt Padgett of Oak Ridge. Funeral service will be 8
p.m., Sunday at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Minister
Noel Kirk officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 12:45 p.m., Monday
at McCarty-Woodhaven Cemetery for a 1 p.m., interment service. The family will
receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral
Home, 1017 Turnpike, Oak Ridge.
