I had actually been planning to post this anyway, but Beverly's query
about books and newspapers nudged me to do it sooner than I might
otherwise have done.
I would like to call your attention to a three-volume set of books on
Campbell County, entitled Campbell County, USA, A History of Places,
Faces, Happenings, Traditions, and Things, by Miller McDonald, the
County Historian. He compiled it by getting out there and talking to
folks, collecting their memories, photos, clippings and family
memorabilia. There is some early history in the book. I only have volume
I, but have found it invaluable in bringing to life Campbell County in
its various periods. The book is crammed full of names, maps and
pictures. It's fun to compare the names from the book with the names
that appear on this list, and to wonder what relations our ancestors
would have had with each other. The book is sturdily bound. Not all of
the photos are that clear--they seem to be photocopied, but they are
good enough to get an idea. Unfortunately, the book is not indexed in
any way. References to any given person are scattered throughout the
book. So, you actually have to read the book to find out if your ancestor
is listed, which is well worth doing in and of itself. It can be found on
the Campbell County GenWeb site under published resources.
