UNGER, WILLIAM ELLSWORTH - age 80, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday night,
October 22, 1998, at the Oak Ridge Health Care Center from complications
resulting from a stroke. A chemical engineer retired after 40 years with Union
Carbide Nuclear Company, he was active in the Melton Hill Regional Development
Association, served on the Oak Ridge Planning Commission and was instrumental
in the development of the Oak Ridge Civic Center. Born in Goshen, Ind. in 1918
to Chester and Bernice Unger, he graduated from Purdue University in 1940, Oak
Ridge School of Reactor Technology in 1965, served in the US Army Ordinance
Department and was discharged from the US Army in 1946 at the rank of major.
He came to Oak Ridge in 1945, where he worked at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory in the chemical technology division, design section. He was known
for his expertise in the radiochemical separations and reprocessing of nuclear
fuel, was named to "Who's Who in Chemical Engineering" and served as an
advisor to the National Security Agency on the proliferation of nuclear
technology in developing countries. He was active in the American Institute of
Chemical Engineers and the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, Oak
Ridge Chapter. He is survived by his brother, Richard Arlington Unger,
Auburndale, Fla.; three sons, Diehl Ellsworth Unger, Louisville, Tenn., Robert
Arlington Unger, Knoxville, William Michael Unger, Knoxville; and their
respective children, Rachel; Wesley, Jennifer and Ryan; and Joshua. He will be
especially missed by his fiancee and loyal friend Ernestine Kackenmester. A
memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 27th at 6 p.m. at the First
Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. The family will receive friends after the
service. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the First
Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.
