Subject: [TN-CEMETERIES] MCNORTON Graves in White County
Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 07:57:12 -0700 (PDT)
If anyone knows of MCNORTON graves anywhere in White County, I would love to hear from you. I believe some of my ancestors were there in the 1840's at least.
My husband also has Sanders relatives buried around McMinnville.
And thanks for the beautiful pictures from White County on the website mentioned earlier. I had no idea Scott's Gulf existed.

Now, see, this is interesting to me! Love the grave photos and would love to see some more detail on the tent graves. :) My hubby just said, "You're weird and I married a strange woman" but he also found your site and this site sort of fascinating as did I (http://www.tngenweb.org/darkside/triangular.html) what with the Civil War history behind it. His mom was a serious CW nutcase and collected all sorts of material and books about it. She would have loved being on the internet and I would have enjoyed sharing the journey with her, for sure!
I told him I'd love to be a grave junkie and didn't mind tromping around a cemetery seein's how my mom and dad live just a few feet from one in Alabama and our family reunions in TN are held at Fall Creek Falls around the cemetery every so often (on both sides of my family - Cox and King - the Tate side is from Eden, NC and they don't get together much. Oddly enough, I have Tate's on my King side as well out of TN but don't know anything at all about them today.)
I was thinking about taking pictures of graves in my area but I'm looking to see if Cobb County, GA already has a site with pics of their graves. Haven't found one so far but I'll be contacting the Genealogical Society this week to make sure. Love looking for TN relatives on the net as I don't get up there at all although my family still lives in/around McMinnville and Sparta.
It's my understanding that the tent graves were made in order to keep the water out but I don't suppose they accounted for the water soaking into the dirt around it so I find it crazy that the idea was implemented in the first place :) LOL
Thank you so much for this link and the adventures of the ride up there!

It took a one hour ride on a four wheeler to travel the 3.5 miles to the Da
vis Cemetery and I was able to locate it with the help of GPS. A normal four
wheel drive vehicle will not be able to travel this trail. There are no
recent burials at the cemetery but several new stones for old burials. After
arrival I found that the cemetery is in the Scott's Gulf - Bridgestone/Firestone
Centennial Wilderness, which is managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources
Agency. A marked hiking trail from the opposite direction than route listed
in the cemetery book comes right by the cemetery so it might be advisable to
check on access from that area. A very interesting cemetery and a great
adventure .
