Judy,

Being buried probably in Memphis and having died in 1865, he may have
been one of the passengers on the steamer Sultana which exploded on the
Mississippi just above Memphis with the greatest loss of life of any
maritime disaster until a Swedish refugee ship was torpedoed in WW II. The
Sultana was carrying released Union prisoners of war to Cairo, IL to be
mustered out of service. If you will give me his name, I will check whether
he was among the known dead of that disaster. The Sultana has its own group
at><

didn't have any connections to TN. However, I just found out my
ggrandfather enlisted in the Civil War from his state of IL. He died in a
hospital in Memphis in 1865 from complications to wounds he suffered in the
war. I always thought he was buried in IL but I found out today he was
buried at Mississippi River National Cemetery in TN. I assume this
cemetery is in Memphis. He left a wife and four small children and I guess
they couldn't afford to ship his body home.

to find out if anyone takes pictures of tombstones there. I would like to
know what it says on his tombstone.
