Hi list,
A good place to start your search for a burial place would be the county
history. First to see if the county you are looking for was formed from a
neighboring county. It could be that the person you are searching for is
actually in another county. One of the best web sites to check the county
history is the TNGenWeb. (www.tngenweb.com). From the home page you can go to
the county page. I have used this on several occasions and discovered that
the county I was looking for was actually part of another county for the time
frame I was searching. Also were the county lines changed at a later date,
this sometimes happens and what you thought was in one county has been moved
by the line to another county, so check the counties that border the one you
are starting with.
EX: "Giles County was created in 1810 in pursuance of an act of the
General Assembly passed November 14, 1809, and at the suggestion of Gen.
Jackson was named in honor of Gen. William B. Giles, one of the governors of
Virginia. Giles County was formed out of Maury County and is bounded as
follows: North by the counties of Maury and Marshall, east by the counties of
Marshall and Lincoln, south by the State of Alabama, west by Lawrence County,
and has an area of 600 square miles." (Goodspeeds' History of Giles County,
Tennessee, 1886)
So if looking for Giles Co. records before 1810 you may have to go to Maury
Co. As some counties did not turn over their records when a new county was
formed.
Hope this helps and happy hunting, Nina
