Union Civil War Soldier to be Honored

Antietam Camp # 3 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW)
will conduct a ceremony on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. to
remember Sgt. J. E. Buffington, a Civil War Veteran who is buried at Trinity
Lutheran Church Cemetery in Taneytown, Maryland. The event will pay special
homage to Sgt. Buffington, a Medal of Honor recipient, close to the date
that our country celebrates National Medal of Honor Day, March 25th. The
ceremonial date also has special significance for two other reasons. First,
it will be held 5 days before the 100th anniversary of the original surprise
ceremony on April 3, 1908 when Sgt. Buffington was presented with his Medal
of Honor. Secondly, the ceremony will be held four days before the date he
earned his Medal of Honor at the Petersburg assault on April 2, 1865.

Sgt. Buffington, a member of the 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment, Sixth Army
Corps, was one of the first men to penetrate the Confederate lines the when
the Union troops broke the lines that eventually led to the fall of
Petersburg and the evacuation of Richmond by the Confederate government and
army. Sgt. Buffington was the first to carry a Union flag into the
Confederate line..

A speaker from the National Medal of Honor Society has been invited to speak
at the ceremony. James R. Fisher, III, a Counselor of the Antietam Camp,
and a co-founder of the 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment Descendant’s
Association, will relate Sgt. Buffington’s actions of that day. Mr. Fisher
is the author of a history of the 6th Maryland
Regiment.

The Gettysburg Camp # 112 of the SUVCW Reserves will provide a Color Guard
in period uniform.

The public is invited.
