There is also a book out on Georgia's underground resistance to the
confederacy but I cannot remember the title. It documents those loyal
citizens who did everything from spying for the Army, identifying river
crossings, to sabotage and even doctors who gave out fake medical deferments
to men to avoid the confederate draft.
It is common myth here in Georgia that the Yankees pillaged everywhere they
went. This is exagerated to the point that it has become commonly accepted.
It is an interesting note that practically no personal property was
destroyed and very little commercial property as the Army moved through
North Georgia.
It wasn't until the army started the march to the sea that the real
destruction started, and then it was not as wide spread as is now accepted.
Georgians are often at a loss to explain how some property was left
conspicuously unharmed in the wake of Sherman's army. I often hear it
explained away that Sherman knew the owner before the war. He really must
have been a man of many friends if that is so. Actually the documents
available show that a lot of the untouched property belonged to Unionists
who were able to demonstrate their loyalty.

There are Southern Unionists in Tennessee (which is the best known) but also
in the mountains of Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina. There were
unionists also in Virginia but most of that area is now known as West
Virginia. I think it became accepted to the US in 1863 if memory serves me
correct.
Here is what I know from recollection and a quick search.
East Tennessee Historical Soceity has a good book on the Tennessee Unionists
called Divided Loyalites. Do a search for it, I think the URL is the name
connected with dashes with a .org. ETHS also has material on Viriginia and
North Carolina as many East Tennesseans came from those areas.
A search on line revealed this
http://ncmuseumofhistory.org/exhibits/civilwar/about_section4c.html which
tells some of the story.
Here is a pretty decent article as I skimmed it on this site
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/NCUV.HTM
There is also apparently a book on letters of a North Carolina Unionist with
a review here:
