Interesting to note on that aspect of history is that at Gloucester Court
House, VA; with in the last couple of years there has been erected a
monument to a black Union regiment that was raised in VA. I would be
interested to know if the usual white officers were also from the area. I
have not been back down there since the monument was erected to find out.

Subject: [SUVCW] Southern Unionists in NC

Brothers,

Noting the discussion on Copperheads, thought I'd pass this along. I don't
do this to aggravate, but more out of concern - in particular, a great deal
of
concern as a historian. It seems that there will be, at some future SCV
event. the discussion on how the idea of Southern Unionists in NC is a
myth! Can
anyone clarify this or am I actually understanding it as I am reading it?

I think there have been some very good works that have been extremely well
researched to come out over the past decade that have started to cover this

very unique aspect of the Civil War. In fact, I ran into a great deal of
info,
covered over by time, in old newspapers in my home county in Virginia in
the
Shenandoah Valley that revealed a lot about Unionists in my home county.
Ultimately, this led to me writing a masters thesis that focused on
Unionists,
dissent, and disaffected Confederates in my home county. While I have seen
a
great deal of talk about "revisionist history" over the years, during my
previous affiliation with the SCV, it concerns me that the SCV may well be
creating
revisionist history of its own in its efforts to counter what, in fact, is
quality history work and not at all "revisionist" in nature.
