Another announcement similar to one I've sent before, but I think this one
has some more contacts.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Historic cemeteries conference to be held in Augusta

ATLANTA (October 3, 2007) - Eternal Places: Discovering Georgia*s
Historic Cemeteries conference will be held at the Ramada Hotel and
Conference Center in Augusta, Georgia, November 1-2, 2007. Registration
information is available online at
http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=395

The conference is supported by a Preserve America grant awarded by the
National Park Service to the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources. HPD*s statewide effort
*Campaign to Preserve Georgia*s Historic Cemeteries* is using the
$86,000 grant in a three-pronged approach. Of the initial grant,
$60,000 was used as sub-grant money and awarded as matching grants to
five Georgia communities in need of assistance in preserving and
interpreting their historic cemeteries. Remaining funds are to be used
to co-sponsor the statewide Eternal Places cemetery conference with the
Georgia Department of Economic Development, Historic Augusta, Inc., and
the Central Savannah River Area Regional Development Center and to
produce a publication entitled, Preserving Georgia*s Historic
Cemeteries.
According to Carole Moore, HPD*s grants coordinator, *the Eternal
Places conference is offered to help Georgians discover how to use
historic cemeteries to tell community stories both to visitors and local
citizens. This conference will illustrate how cemeteries are not only
revered and sacred public places, but interesting cultural landscapes
and the setting for educational opportunities.*

Speakers include Debi Hacker, Conservation Administrator and Education
Coordinator of the Chicora Foundation, Inc.; historian and genealogist
Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr.; and James R. Cothran, FASLA, of Robert and Co.
Other speakers will highlight topics such as heritage tourism,
cemeteries as cultural landscapes, development of preservation plans,
cemetery maintenance, and legal issues.

Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend the opening
day reception and tour of St. Paul*s Episcopal Church and cemetery on
November 1, and the historic Magnolia and Cedar Grove cemeteries on
November 2. Visitors will learn about the history and records of the
cemeteries, view a variety of interesting tombstones and ironwork, and
hear about some of the people who are buried there.

Tourism officials, cemetery staff, preservationists, educators,
genealogists, city officials, historical societies, Main Street and
Hometown managers, or cemetery volunteers and enthusiasts that want to
register for the conference or request more information about Eternal
Places: Discovering Georgia*s Historic Cemeteries, may contact, Carole
Moore, at 404-463-8434; or Carrie
Hutcherson, at 404-651-5287; .
