Subject: Re: [STEWART] Most Ancient Stewart Ancestor (all spellings)
Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 10:25:17 EST
Dear Listers, when I sent this message Friday I incorrectly provided a date
for when my James Stewart came to America. The following response should be
substituted for that question and response.
Correct response: When did they come? According to the family history
above, my James (my 5ggf) was seven when he accompanied his father and father’s
brothers to America. His birthday recorded in the family Bible was 24 Dec 1723
thus making his year of immigration, from Ireland, 1730/31. Probably 1731 is
the year since James was born in December.
Thanks for your indulence.

Dear Listers:
What is the earliest date you have for a Stewart Ancestor in your line?
According to family history, James (my 5ggf) came to America at about the age of
seven with his father James (my 6ggf) and his father's brothers John and
William. It is said in family papers that James settled in Iredell County, North
Carolina, while William settled in Virginia and John settled in Pennsylvania.
(I haven’t even begun to research either William or John). There is some
speculation among my Stewart Family researchers that James (my 6ggf and his son
James) may have gone to Pennsylvania before migrating to western North Carolina.
The reason for this speculation is because of the names of his children, he
may be related to the Stewarts of Paxtang, Pennsylvania, e.g. Lazarus Stewart,
etc., but there is no hard proof for this theory. James, the son, (my 5ggf)
is known to have lived at the headwaters of Buffalo Shoal Creek in Iredell
County, North Carolina during the 1790s. It is believed that sometime between
November 1799 and August 1801, James moved to Jackson County, Georgia. Family
history said he died at age 96 making his birth date about 1721.
Who is the progenitor of your line as far as your research goes today? The
family history above identifies James Stewart (my 6ggf) but I have nothing but
a name for him and his brothers John and William. So here I will discuss
James, his son, (my 5ggf). The following is provided. First, the Stewart Clan
Magazine identifies this James as follows: of Iredell County (G251), and on page
H219 speculation has him married to Mary Stewart. How whether of not Mary’s
surname was Stewart or something else has not been proved. Secondly, James
and Mary Stewart’s family is identified and proved as follows:James Stewart was
born 24 Dec 1723 in Ulster, Ireland and died 17 Feb 1817 in Jackson County,
Georgia. +Mary Stewart was born 28 Sep 1736 place unknown and died 30 Nov
1794 in Iredell County, North Carolina.Children of this marriage include:1.
William was born 5 Jun 1757 in North Carolina and date of death unknown.2.
Margery was born 15 Mar 1759 in North Carolina and date of death unknown.3. Mary
was born 3 Jul 1761 in North Carolina and died 5 Nov 1822 place unknown.4.
Lazarus was born 30 Mar 1763 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died about
1830/31 in Adams County, Illinois. He married Mary “Polly” Boyd about 1803 in
Kentucky.5. James was born 14 Apr 1765 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died
in Troup County, Georgia 6 Feb 1856. He is buried at McCosh Mill in Troup
County, Georgia. He married Margery McGee 25 Mar 1794 in Iredell County, North
Carolina. Some researchers think that Margery’s surname may have been
McEwen/McCuin/McCune.6. Margaret was born 10 Apr 1767 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
I have nothing else on this sibling.7. Sarah was born 24 Feb 1769 in Rowan
County, North Carolina and married a Robert Steel 21 Nov 1787.8. John was
born 9 Dec 1771 in Rowan County, North Carolina. I have nothing else on this
sibling.9. George was born 22 Feb 1773 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died
27 Jan 1863 in Kingston, Roane County, Tennessee. He married Jane Boyd 11 Feb
1796 in Iredell County, North Carolina.10. David Mitchell (my 4ggf) was born
16 Jul 1775 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died 1 Nov 1854 in Marengo,
Crawford County, Indiana. He married first, Annie Sloan 5 Nov 1799 in
Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. His second marriage was to Elizabeth
Springer 11 Nov 1847 in Crawford County, Indiana. I have pictures of David
Mitchell Stewart.11. Martha was born 16 Jul 1777 in Rowan County, North Carolina
and died 16 Jul 1781.12. Samuel was born 13 Jul 1779 in Rowan County, North
Carolina and died 3 Jul 1812 in Jackson County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth
Camp about 1807 in Jackson County, Georgia.Note: Birth and death dates and
places come from the David Stewart Family Bible. I have much more information on
these individuals and their descendants. Also, they seem to have followed
the established naming pattern.Other Information: James (my 5ggf and the father
of this family) was a blacksmith. It has been established that he lived four
miles from Island Ford Road near the headwaters of Buffalo Shoal Creek,
[Iredell County, North Carolina]. This location was given when his son George
married in 1796. He later moved to Jackson County, Georgia with son David in
1799. He died while living with David.
Who is your immigrant to whatever country you are in? My immigrant is an
early settler of America.
When did they come? According to the family history above, my James (my5ggf)
was seven when he accompanied his father and father’s brothers to America.
His birthday recorded in the family Bible was 24 Dec 1723 thus making his year
of immigration, from Ireland, 1716.
How did they get there? I presume they arrived by boat since major airlines
were not operating at that time. <Grin>
Where did they come from? Ulster, Ireland is given as the place of birth for
my James (my 5ggf) so my assumption is that they came from Ireland.
Why did they leave? Or did they? I don’t know why they left.
I have participated in the Stewart DNA project and the results are listed
under Malcolm Stewart.
