Have to fully agree with the last line in this paragraph.
Just finished doing it in France for my wife's line, and the adventure alone
made it fantastic, including meeting a host of folks in each and every
village
or city.
The wife did the same thing with me for my line, visiting villages and
cities in
TN, AL, MS, and TX, and, in our case, all little holes in the wall, with
names
such as Dime Box, Priddy, Harper, Scooba, Carthage, Fayetteville, and
Sunrise.
Don't regret it a bit. Just wish I had been able to bring the kids along
and keep
their attention long enough to enjoy it. Oh well.....,

> Erica, I would like to reply to this with my 2cents. For many years I was
the registrar for my local DAR chapter. When prospective members came
wanting to know how to fill out their papers, a lot of them brought their
"Family History Book" with them assuring me that they had all the
information on their ancestor back to the Rev. War. I would always look at
the book and comment how nicely written it was and what interesting
ancestors they had. Then I would explain to them the difference in a
primary source and a secondary source. I would then give them a set of
working papers telling them to fill in each blank and ATTACH A COPY OF THE
ORIGINAL RECORD WHICH PROVED WHAT THEY HAD WRITTEN IN EACH BLANK SPACE. I
explained it was sort of like a lawyer taking a case to court and having to
prove beyond a reasonable doubt that his information is correct. Any other
than a copy of the original record leaves some room for doubt. When there
was absolutely no original record provin!
> g what they had written, we would go to court and do our best to use
preponderance of evidence. As to Bible records, a lot of lineage societies
accept them with certain conditions. They consider the copyright date and
the handwriting. As to the on line census images, these are copies of the
original. It's also easy enough to get hard copies of the originals.
Marriage records are just as easy to verify. Your state archives and
courthouse personnel, for a small fee, will send you copies of what you
request. Through the on line State GenWeb pages there is usually a list of
people who will do lookups and make copies for you at your expense. In my
humble opinion the very best part of genealogy is the places you go and the
people you meet while pursuing the names to fill in the blanks whether you
want the information to write a book, join a lineage society or just to give
to your grandchildren.
