Hello Patti and Marita,

I got your name & email address from the Hamilton County (Ohio) Surname
Registry.

I am researching Stewarts in that area in the early 1800s.

While on a recent visit to Randolph County, Illinois, I discovered a pioneer
history in which my gg grandfather, WILLIAM STEWART, is said to have come
from Hamilton County as a young man. Randolph county, IL is down the Ohio
river near the confluence with the Mississippi river.

In the 1840 census in Randolph County, IL, he is marked as being 20-30 years
old. I have his 1836 marriage document (to Nancy Douglas) but no age is
indicated. He died about 1850 according to the above mentioned pioneer
history of Thomas Robert Stewart, William's son.

Oral family history indicated that he had at least one brother and the
spelling of the name may have been different in Ohio. It is also said that
he may have gone west with the army to Fort Gage/Kaskaskia.

William and Nancy had two children, Johanna born in 1839 and Thomas Robert
Stewart born in 1841, both in Randolph County, IL. Given typical family
naming for children at that time, William Stewart's father may have been
Thomas or there were others in the family with the names Thomas and Robert.
These names do not come from the Douglas side.

Any information you can supply will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Douglas Stewart
Fairfield, Iowa
