Here is the whole article on Nevin Stewart from the SCM, E49-50, issue
of July 1944, given under the general heading of "Stewarts in Halifax
County, VA", which includes Richard, George, Margaret, Alexander,
Matthew and Stephen, none of whom are given as related to each other or
anyone else, or who have any descendants mentioned. Capitalized
surnames and paragraphing mine.
"Nevin Stewart was a flitting sort of a fellow, and doesn't belong in
Halifax county any more than anywhere. He was probably a British
subject and came to this country after the Revolutionary war to make his
fortune. He was born about 1760, we may judge, and married Eupheme
TABB, daughter of Thomas Tabb of Halifax county, NC. He engaged in the
mercantile business in Mecklenburg county, VA, and on 13 Mar 1780 he
sued Thomas HUMPHRIES for a debt in that county. The county court on 10
Apr 1787 gave him a license 'to keep a retail store in this county for
one year.'
On 13 Nov 1787 he took the oath of fidelity to the commonwealth of
Virginia. He was inclined to spell his name Stuart up to this time, but
hereafter it was Stewart. He sued ANDERSON & WOODSON in the Cumberland
county court 28 Apr 1789 on a note for £3.9, and at the same time sued
John WOODSON on a note for £4.2. Nevin Stewart of Mecklenburg county
deeded 18 Nov 1797 to Chiverius COLEMAN for £300 230 acres adjoining
David HOLMES. This land was late the property of DINWIDDIE & Co.,
British subjects, and had been sold by Clausel CLAUSEL, escheator for
Mecklenburg county, to Edward FINCH, who sold it to Stewart. The
witnesses were Thomas COLEMAN and William COLEMAN.
Soon afterward Stewart moved to Lunenburg county, just north of
Mecklenburg. On 15 Oct 1798 Nevin Stewart of Lunenburg County bought of
Edward BYBEE of Campbell county for £115 500 acres of land in
Pittsylvania county on both sides of Sycamore Creek [in the north end of
the county]: witnesses, Crispin SHELTON, Leroy SHELTON and Jennings
BROWN. Caleb JOHNSON of Mecklenburg county, being indebted to Nevin
Stewart of Lunenburg county, made a deed of trust on 1 Nov 1799, to
William PETTUS and Francis HESTER of 205 acres of land in Mecklenburg
county and some negroes as security for the debt.
Stewart moved into Pittsylvania county, perhaps occupying his 500-acre
plantation on Sycamore creek. On 20 Feb 1806, Nevin Stewart of
Pittsylvania county bought of James FAMBROUGH for $10 20 acres on the
Cattail fork of Sycamore creek, bounded by Fambrough's and Stewart's
lines. The witnesses to the deed were John CLAVER, Isham DALTON and
Jesse KEESIE [deeds, 14:263].
Old Tom TABB died down in North Carolina and willed a number of slaves
to his son-in-law. Nevin went and brought the darkies from Halifax
county, NC to his Virginia farm: his authorization to import them into
the state was dated 21 Sep 1811, and recorded in Pittsylvania county.
His fortune was made. We presume one of his children was:
Nevin, marr. 21 Dec 1822 Rachel DOSS (bondsman Lewis DALTON)"
