Fascinating reading! I watched Manor House on PBS, and found how the
servants lived and were treated very enlightening. We don't realize how
many freedoms we have today which the servants did not have in Edwardian
England, as late as the beginnin of WWI.

The lady's maid in Manor House, was a Scotswoman. Delightful to hear her
accent and her comments. There was such a strict hierarchy - upper
servants and lower servants, the lowest being the scullery maid. On Manor
House, all of the servants in the 21st C were pretty well educated, but 2
who had signed on as scullery maid for the 3 months, quit! They were
homesick, couldn't stand the grinding work and lack of freedoms we take for
granted!
