Hello:

This message is being sent in follow up to the recent update by
Kathi Bobb regarding the Stewart-DNA project that she
manages.

All interested parties are invited and encouraged to join the
Stewart-DNA-L discussion list that supports the Stewart-DNA
Project(s).

STEWART-DNA-L

Topic: [short version as posted to Rootsweb -- see more detail below]
Discussing and sharing of information regarding the Stewart DNA project. This project
entails Y-DNA testing for males with the
Stewart surname in order to establish genetic connections with cousins worldwide,
compliment genealogical research through genetics,
and prove or disprove various theories of the origin of the Stewart name.

MORE DETAILS:

This discussion group had been created expressly for the
purpose of providing a public forum dedicated to all of
the Stewart DNA projects, current and future.

Subscription to the list is free, as are all of Rootsweb's
resources. One need only have an interest in the Project(s)
to subscribe. It is not mandatory to be a participant in
any of the DNA projects to be included in the discussions.
Participants in the project(s) are not required to state so,
if they prefer to remain anonymous in their participation.

Subscription to the Stewart-DNA-L has several purposes:

-- It allows the Project Manager(s) a place to hold group discussions
and share information without having to maintain a special and
unweildly mailing list in their own address book -- which can for
several reasons accidentally get wiped out. It also overcomes the
necessity of creating several group send lists and the likelihood
that the mail will be rejected/blocked/etc. as "SPAM" due to the
number of recipients. Having maintained such a list for my local
genealogical society for quite some time, I am familiar with the
pitfalls of trying to maintain bulk mailings without the capabilities
of a mailing list such as capable with Listserv or Majordomo. It
is not long before it reaches critical mass and things go afoul.

-- It also allows the interested parties to correspond with each other, even without
knowing the other participants/interested parties email addresses and without having to
ask a third party to relay the message.

-- All messages are archived, so no matter when one may hear of the
projects, one may visit the archives to read more about them.

-- Your email address is not distributed to anyone and no one has
access to the list of subscribers. However, your address is viewable
and contained in any message that you post to the list. This allows
others to respond to you directly should they need or choose.

-- Mail sent to the group via the Stewart-DNA-L has been screened by
Rootsweb's anti-virus and anti-spam software. Therefore you have their
assurance that mail you receive from them, via their resources, will
be "clean."

-- Project Managers and/or participants in other DNA studies will also
be found subscribed to this list. They, from time to time, may send
posts or participate in discussions, share results, that further
enrich your experience of participating in the project(s). There have been
some interesting posts re apparent matches with other Surname Group DNA
projects.

-- It allows the freedom to post re the DNA project(s) to the extent that is not possible
on Stewart forums that are focused and dedicated to genealogy. Rootsweb has provided this
specialized list in recognition of the broadening of the perspective of what the persuit
of genealogy is in today's world. Its focus is on the persuit of genetic genealogy, with
the genetic chase being the primary focus and DNA match as its aim
to "proving" one's genealogical connection with others.

Discussion includes:
- Project Status Reports

- Project Results Reports/interpretation

- Discussion of the above

- Genealogy related to the persuit of the Most Common Recent Ancestor

- History of the families and the surnames of the project and particpipants

- History of the families and the surnames of those apparently related per the
interpretation of project results and data submitted.
and more....

The current rules are simple:

Rootsweb has set forth in an agreement that I must uphold/enforce:

a) that we cannot quote testing prices on list --
they can be sent privately with ease or are viewable via web links.
Rough ideas of cost "less than $200.00" are acceptable, whereas
"for only $99", or "for $169.00" is not.

and

b) that we cannot "market" specific labs on list --
HOWEVER, this has been clarified that we can freely, openly discuss
the pros, cons and recommendations for any lab or DNA Project support
company and provide links to the various commercial entities.

I think that is plenty reasonable as MyFamily.com who supports
Rootsweb financially [owns them] also has their own DNA testing
product. They are essentially allowing free space to the "competition",
after a manner.

The "other" rules are:

List Administration issues, problems with other listmembers or their
posts are to be sent privately to as
they are not the focus of the list and *per Rootsweb policy* are to be
dealt with off list. The List Administrator is in charge of keeping
decorum on the list and her directives must be followed. Failing to
do so may result in being placed on the reject list temporarily or
permanent removal from the list. This is not about censorship or dictatorship, it is
about preserving the peaceful enjoyment and focus of the list.

Project Administration issues can be posted and responded to onlist, however, must be done
so, politely. As these issues are considered
part of the focus of the list.

Adherance to the Rootsweb Acceptable Use Policy.

Don't post virus messages, warnings, etc. but send to the List Admin
to review and respond or relay to the list.

Protect your fellow listmembers data by keeping *your* anti-virus software
active and up to date.

Be cognizant that all posts are archived "forever" and viewable world wide.
Think twice before posting anything that you may feel you would prefer not be read by the
whole world at any time in the future. It is nigh on impossible to have posts removed
from the archives. And it is something that the List Administrator cannot perform for you
or request on your
behalf.

I look forward to seeing you join the 100+ subscribers currently on the list. We welcome
your input in the discussion. To get the most out
of your subscription and the project, active participation is encouraged.

Kind Regards,

Lauren Boyd
