Dear Listers:

Whether you are brand new to genealogy or have
been afflicted with the disease for 40 years,
it seems that we all get befuddled at times
trying to figure out how to describe our
relationships. You know, "are you 1st cousins,
once removed or is that a second cousin?"

Someone on one of my other lists just posed
the question of how to understand that she
was the 8th cousin, 4 times removed from
someone that she is in contact with.

That is pretty mind boggling. They are of the
10th and 14th generation of the common ancestor.

There was a good response that also pointed us
to a website with a great chart to calculate
relationships:

I would suggest everyone visit the site and print
the chart. It belongs in your research hints binder!
