Dear Kate:

France is included in the list of Septs for Clan Stewart,
as associated with the main or "Royal" branch. I have never
heard the tale you recite and suspect it may be a nice legend.
I will check further and let you know what I can discover.

The general story re France and the Stewarts is that as the
French language had no "w", the spelling in France was Stuart.
Perhaps you have Stuarts somewhere in your France line?
You may also have ancestors from the Balquhiddher Stewart line,
but perhaps an earlier generation than your Frances.

Surnames of Scotland, by George Black does not quote any
mention of Stewarts associated with the name French/France.
The first mention of the name France in the Scots records was
in 1683, per Black.

Yours Aye,

Lauren
