Subject: [STEWART] Ralph & Mack Stewart??

I am trying to track my grandfather, a Ralph Stewart, b. ca. 1906, and
supposedly residing in Gaston Co. NC in 1929 (my father was born Nov. 14,
1929--unnamed on the birth certificate but later named Kenneth Craig
Stewart). Acc. to the b. cert. he was married (but this is dubious) to my
grandmother, a Martha Mulwee, b. May 11, 1910 in Blacksburg, SC. In December
1933, she gave birth to my aunt, Doris Elizabeth Stewart, fathered by a Mack
Stewart b. ca. 1902 (if the age on the b. cert. is correct). Again, acc. to
the b.cert. she was married to him (again, dubious). Supposedly they were
brothers.
This was a "skeleton in the closet" about which my grandmother was unwilling
to talk. Some 20 years ago, she told me w/ tears in her eyes, "You'll find
out when I'm gone." She is still living, but does not recognize or remember
me, and her "prophecy" may well prove true.
Does anyone have any suggestions for pursuing this? I could conceivably
travel there, as I live only about 2 hours away. But if I do, I would like to
spend this time most productively. I only began this search in earnest in
September, at which time I got a really big break and tracked my mother's
mother's mother's Shrader line (from Sevier Co. TN) back to Christopher
Shrader (War of 1812) who married the daughter of Jesse Webb, Revolutionary
War soldier.
Also, just in passing, is anyone "unbiased" enough to know whether
Ancestry.com is the best online genealogy service to join? I haven't joined
yet, but have been mulling it over.
Thanks so much for any advice.
Ken(neth Craig) Stewart (Jr.)
