Basically my resourses have been in Stanstead Quebec directly on the Vermont
border. The first Stewart in my line here was Horace Stewart (Alexander
Stwart line)who married Catherine Hinman on Feb. 3 1830 in Derby
Vermont...vertually across the street from Beebe. , daughter of Timothy
Hinman. He opened a merchantile store half in US and half in Canada and
lived next door to it in the USA. He is listed in "Ripley's Believe it or
not"...store in two countries.
Horaces son's was Rufus Porter Stewart who married Annie Brown May 16 1871
in Malone NY. There son Harry Brown Stewart was my Grandfather and he
married Florence Mae Stewart...(Duncan Stewart line) of Auburndale Mass on
January 7 1903.
There is a wonderful Journal that is one of the oldest newspapers in
Ontario, possibly Canada, called the Stanstead Journal. David Lepetre runs
a genealogy article in the paper and has lived in the area forever.
He knows everyone and has connected me with a number of people who have
become great genealogical friends and also some old family friends. David
runs quiries in the newspaper and even will post photos. He really in a
gem.
Also in Stanstead there is the Colby Curtis Museum and Historical Society on
Dufferin Street. The ladies there have been so helpful and very
knowledgable. I have located about 1000 letters, notes, invitations, photos
that were donated by my grandfathers family to the museum. They go back to
about 1840's , From these letters I have connected new cousins and lines,
as well as absorbed a very definite sense of how fair, honourable and wise a
businessmen Horace and his son Rufus were. Plus they have numerous census
records etc. that I have read through but shall re-do on my next visit.
Harry Browns home and Harry Stewart's home are just down the street from
each other on Pricipal St. and I have been invited into both...what a
thrill.
Besides that, my father was a historian and died when I was young. He had
numerous Pedigree pages going back to 1645 connecting with numerous lines.
So I have been decoding these and embellishing them with siblings etc.
Because I have had this great skeleton to work with the research has been
quite enjoyable...but there are always glitches as all can attest too! So I
am going to lean on my cousins in this forum and would be more than happy to
share too! I have not met anyone from this Vermont/Beebe line here as
yet...there are those that went to California and many maternal Stewart's
line in Mass./NC/NY areas but this line has been slow. So any help would
be appreciated too!
Well, Lauren, I don't suppose you expected 'a book' in response to your
simple
introduction...caught me on a gabby day I suppose!
Again , welcome and this is a great start to get the juices flowing and the
word spreading! Well done "eh"? lol
