Thanks to the kindness of strangers I have finally found the immigrant in my
Stewart family. Sylvanus Steward came to Maine from Canada. The first I
find him here is in Houlton in 1840, then to Waldo county, Maine.

Now, of course, I have no earthly idea how one searches Canada. Was
Sylvanus just passing through Canada from Scotland, or was the family there
for some generations? My father's family has the name Loren in it
throughout the generations--were they from Lorne? Suggestions, clansmen,
