Hi Julia,
This family is in the Stewart Clan Magazine, beginning with an article
on page D93, where James Stewart is said to have married Sarah HARRIS
(bond signed 26 Oct 1773), daughter of Charles Harris. He was the son
of Patrick Stewart however, not James, according to research done by the
editor. This is the issue of September 1939, Vol. XVII, No. 3. Please
see my indexes to the SCM at http://users.hol.gr/~mkyritsi/
Apparently when Nathaniel married on 19 Dec 1807, his wife was called
Millie, so the editor assumed her name was Millicent. Nice to know she
was really Mildred.
Other pages for this family: D114, H268, I228, J88, but the only
children traced were Sarah Harris Stewart, b. 10 Oct 1808, who marr. 17
Dec 1827 William Wright, and Thomas Nathaniel Stewart, b. 1823, who
married Rebecca F. Martin 27 Jan 1859 in Pike Co., MO. This information
was apparently sent in to the editor by descendants. The principle
pages are D93, which gives the original story down to Sarah Harris
Stewart, and H268, which is when Thomas Nathaniel Stewart was
discovered.
Jeb (who was really J.E.B., James Ewell Brown Stewart) is also mentioned
in the SCM, if you mean the Confederate hero. He was the son of
Archibald and Elizabeth (Pennill) Stewart, born 6 Feb 1833, and his name
can be found on pages B148, B206, C196, C282, D159, G13, H56, H64.
There is no easy explanation of why Mildred called him cousin, but in
looking up the surname Turpin I ran into an interesting link on page
G47:
"William Reynolds Stewart, born 19 Apr 1826, married 17 Jan 1860 Mary
Jane Wright, who was born 25 Dec 1838. He died 16 May 1864. His widow
married 20 Nov 1879 Fielding H. Jeter, by whom she had a son, Ernest
Stewart Jeter, born 17 Apr 1881, who went to Alden, Rice Co., Kansas.
Filding H. Jeter had married (1) 4 Jan 1857 Martha Ann, widow of one
James W. Stuart, and by her he had a son, Walter Presley Jeter, who
married Alice Pinkney Stewart, at Stewartsville. Martha Ann (elsewhere
called Virginia Ann), surname unknown, married (1) in 1839 Simon A.
White. She married (2) 29 Sep 1847 James W. Stuart in Bedford county,
the surety on the marriage bond being Philip TURPIN. (note at the foot
of the page: Philip Turpin, a soldier in the war of 1812, was born in
1787, son of Thomas and Rachel (Cheatwood) Turpin.) Fielding H. Jeter,
who took a notion to change his first name to Fielden to make it accord
with popular pronunciation, died 2 May 1894, aged 84, at his home in
Bedford county and was buried beside his first wife, Virginia Ann
White. His second wife, Mary J., died 5 Apr 1919. Child of William R.
and Mary J. (Wright) Stewart:
Alice Pinkney, 2 Nov 1862, m. 2 Nov 1882 Walter P. Jeter: to Kansas in
1885"
That certainly sounds like your Martha Ann Turpin.
There is a link on my page given above to explain the pagination, and
which issues these pages are in, as well as a link to show where the
complete series (1922-1970) of the SCM can be found.
Good luck,
Mary
