Hello everyone, I just returned from Derry NH where my plan was to trace the
steps of the Londonderry Stewarts from Kittery,ME to Londonderry and other
places on their trek westward. Everywhere we went, people greeted us
warmly.
In Derry, I was able to connect with the local historian Ralph Bonner and he
took us about and we learned much about the area. We found the graves of
the first settlers, Rev. McGregore and Charter John Stewart. There were
others as well. Went to the farm that John Stewart's "precept lot" is now a
part of. The libraries were most informative. Londonderry has a very new
library with a climate-controlled genealogy room. It was a wealth of
information as well as the one in East Derry...Taylor Library that has been
endowed by the family of Astronaut Alan Shepard.
Following the Stewarts through NH, VT and MA and finally into NY was very
interesting. Charter John's mother, widow and son migrated to Colrain, MA.
They too had many points of interest, but the Griswold Library had to be a
special spot. It seems that the Scotch-Irish put a high emphasis on
education and refinement. Charter John's brother Robert is my ancestor and
very little is written of him and there is some confusion between him and
John's son Robert b. 1707. I need more accurate information on Robert b.
1684 esp. his spouses and the children by each of them. John was born in
Ireland and he and a brother Samuel came over with his father and
Grandmother Jannett Forsythe Stewart as well as other relatives.
I found much information in Berlin, VT on Simpson and Hannah Rollins
Stewart and their son John who married Tamor Hubbard. Town clerk happened
to be in the office on Saturday for absentee ballots and gladly gave us
photo copies of all the information she had. Was able to get to the Black
Cemetery and find many of my ancestors and their families.
Most of the information was simply verification of dates and names that
I had on a pedigree sheet. It is good to see the originals in black and
white. One important book is Willys book of Nutfield. I would like a copy
of that, any clues about locating one? If I can be of help, please let me
know. If anyone has verification of info on Robert b. 1684, it would be
appreciated. Nora in St. L.
