Hi Charles,

Edson had a little collection of circled reference numbers which he used
a bit randomly. He printed them on the first page of almost every
issue.

1. Bible Record
2. church
3. town
4. gravestone
5. probate
6. court
7. land
8. military
9. pension
10. census
11. tradition
12. local history
13. patriotic society
14. biography or genealogy
15. deduction of the editor

He didn't, however, actually use them in every instance. The best
source for the whole line of Lieut. William Steward of Stonington CT is
in the subtitle beneath the title: it was submitted to him by Horace W.
Dickerman of New Haven, CT. The only other reference used in the
beginning of this line is following this sentence: "On Dec 27, 1722, he
and his wife Sarah deeded to 'ye Reverend Mr Creighead, clerk in
Stonington,' land they had bought five days previously of Saxton
Palmer." This is followed by the circled numeral 7.

In only the rarest instances, and for the most part far later during the
years Edson published the SCM, did he actually give liber numbers or any
other concrete sources for his information.

His son Phineas was mentioned, among the other known children, in
William's will dated 20 Oct 1753, probated 26 Dec 1754. He only
mentioned two grandsons in it, both named William.

The births of Phineas and his siblings were recorded in Stonington.
Have you combed the Stonington VRs? Also, have you considered that
Terry may be a short version of something else? This line was very
strong on Biblical names. The paragraph on Phineas on A190 only gives
the children by his first wife Hannah Barnaby, but he had been married
to Remember Babcock first, on 11 Jan 1745. However, his first child by
his second wife, Hannah Barnaby, was born 17 Aug 1748, so there was
probably only one child by Remember; I suppose another sad case of her
dying in childbirth. There are no little circled reference numbers for
Phineas. Two children are in italics however: Gilbert, b. 4 Dec 1772
and Esther, no date. This usually means the connection is speculative,
probably by Horace Dickerman in the original manuscript.

Have you been in touch with the A. Morgan Stewart Memorial Library in
Stonington? It is housed in the North Stonington Historical Society,
P.O. Box 134, North Stonington CT 06359. It's possible that they could
give you an idea where Dickerman's manuscript is, if it is still in
existence. They have a website:

Hope this helps.
